This is really simple, correct??(spoiler)

At the end he walks by and sees his book in the store window- it's a NOVEL. No one was really killed. The 'movie' we saw was the book he wrote when he moved into the house. Simple, right?

reply

Perhaps. It is one way of interpreting the story.
Then again it could also be the book he wrote after the fact, inspired by everything we saw happening in the movie.

It works for me. I enjoyed the movie and that is how it pretty well played out in my mind.

I feel that if this version were to be true and it were all to be a fictional story about a real murder in the house - that the writer moved into - his name on the book would have to be different to the characters in his book, i.e. Peter and Will.

It would be cool though.

I like this theory, never looked at the ending this way.

What I thought was that he's just back at the psychiatric hospital. Remember when he was living in his illusions, he said to Libby that his characters were already clear but not the story. In the end, when he's back to the city (the psychiatric hospital in reality) he certainly got treated again by doctor Greely (he already went see her in the movie), who continued helping him. The books are the representation of him remembering everything while still living in the safe fantasy world his mind created.

reply

Not for me; after discovering the identity of the killers and the subsequent fire he regained his old self again and ended up writing an autobiography about the life he led after the city. That was his redemption arc.
