Dinosaurs - NOT

I just started watching this show. It's cute; I'll form more of an opinion later.

One thing bugs me, though. The "host" family, if you will, is NOT a group of dinosaurs. Pterosaurs are NOT dinosaurs, despite popular imaging.

So I get a kick out of the 1 review here, which goes on about how wonderful it is that it shows FACTS about pre-history, and clears up misconceptions, and even has a real paleontologist explain things. But the Elephant in the Room is sitting right there - a bunch of non-dinosaurs hosting a show with "dinosaur" in the title and acting as if they are all just another bunch of dinosaurs. It wouldn't be as bad if they were just passing through. But they're the hub of the show!

Well considering that the most frequent rider of the dinosaur train ARE dinosaurs, it would make sense that it would be called the Dinosaur Train. And the show isn't named for the family in it, but for the mode of transportation they use.

And Buddy is kind of the main character...and he IS a dinosaur.

Also.. they do make a point in the show that Pteradons are NOT actually dinosaurs.

reply

Absolutely, talvari. I think there's an entire episode about pteranodons in which they DO talk about how they're not technically dinosaurs at all. There's a different episode where they discuss how pterosaurs were cold-blooded and Buddy (like many dinosaurs) was warm-blooded.

The episode "That's Not a Dinosaur" aired this morning, explaining that Pterosaurs are indeed not dinosaurs...they simply live alongside and interact with them, and are similar enough for a family to have adopted a baby T. Rex. The other two respondents already addressed the validity of the title. It is a clever, creative, original, educational show, and I approve of it. ^^

the title of the show is dinosaur train, which means that the train itself, the vehicle that the pteranodon family visit other time zones and mesozoic creatures, including dinosaurs, pterasaurs, reptiles ( land, sea and airborne) amphibians and insects

so the star of the show is the train itself, not the pteranodon family

I know this is an old thread . . .

but I just watched the opening with this comment in mind and they certainly give the impression that the pteranodons are dinosaurs. Buddy, the t-rex, is the last egg to hatch and when he does, and it's obvious that he's different, Mrs. Pteranodon says something to the effect of "all dinosaurs are different but I'm still your mom." Then they go straight to talking about how they all ride the dinosaur train. The whole intro is very clearly telling you that this is a show about dinosaurs who ride something called a dinosaur train.

reply

"What am I doing in a pteranodon nest?...This is your family and I'm your mom. You may be different but we're all creatures. All dinosaurs have different features." There are lots of episodes where they say they aren't dinosaurs. One that springs to mind I think someone else mentioned already. Anyway it had a really annoyed my song. Basically just them repeating "that's not a dinosaur" over and over and over.
