See: almost every other movie that says BASED on actual events. Which means it's all BS. Others include the Amityville Horror, Fargo, The Forth Kind, etc.

(The first) Amityville Horror WAS based on actual events - although it turned out to be lies. The Lutzes who purchased the house in Amityville for way below it's value (because of the homicides that had occurred there), STILL could not afford the house. Supposedly, they cooked up the story for profit, and possibly with the defense attorney for Ronald DeFeo who murdered his family in the home, so he could plead not guilty to murder.

There's just no excuse for the second movie - except to see Ryan Reynolds without a shirt.

As for Fargo - that was a joke.

Origanl woman was "LOLA" a lady working in a turtle canning factory in the 1920's, she stepped on a stonefish and died an aggonizing death. Many visitors to the island report encounters with the ghost. The original shack has been removed from the island and is pieces at a heritage museum near Gladstone Qld. The grave is still on the island however not in it's origanal position.By the way the film was filmed on Masthead island approx 20km from real island around 60km out. Hope this helps.

This is based on real events as in some couple went to an island and got raped by Greek braconeers, then blamed it all on ghosts.

Alot of horror movies these days use that term very losely. The term "Based on actual events" can be a very open statement. Gone are the days of movies that are properly based on actual events such as "Alive". These days they take actual events and blow them out of proportion to make a movie.

"The Strangers" is a really good example of this. A movie about a family of killers going around and knocking on doors to find out if people are home and kill them if they are. This movie claims to be based on actual events. The actual events it is based on are the directors own experiences of people going around and knocking on peoples doors. And if they wernt home they would rob the house. When i found that out my oppinion of the whole movie went to *beep* Its basically lying to get viewers.

Agree with Razamafraz about the "based on true events" tag. That simply means 99% fiction.

Yeah but there is a family that was tortured and killed while in the woods. It happened in California. http://www.crimemagazine.com/cold-case-keddie-murders

Actually, what the film intro says is "Inspired by actual events." You'll notice this careful wording in a lot of movies. It's not untrue... it just means the only connection between reality and the movie is that there is some real story/legend/history that inspired the writer when he/she wrote the story.

I've been fooled by this a few times in the past... sometimes they do say "Based on..." which is more misleading. I don't really mind unless the film goes out of it's way to try to pretend it is based on reality. If I can't puzzle it out without doing research on whether it's real, then I get annoyed.

Yes! Essentially it means a fictional story grasping for some veneer of respectability, through a loose association with past events.🐭
