Deadly Stonefish...?

OK guys, educate this European here... are Stonefish really that deadly or not? In the movie they're like "herp derp dead in half an hour or something didn't pay attention much" but according to Google they're not so deadly...

Anyway, silly movie. Potential but fell on it's arse pretty bad. Only the scenery and music was really sweet.

I don't know what you were googling but the Stonefish is the most venomous fish in the world. It has spines which penetrate your feet if you stand on one and the pain from these fish is excruciating, the person becomes paralysed in a short space of time as it causes swelling and if not taken to hospital and given anti-venom a person dies within 2hrs. Most people are treated successfully these days.

Even though these fish are in the northern part of Australia I have always had a fear of them as they can't be seen in the water as they look just like the coral/stones etc. From what I've heard the pain is unbearable but can be relieved by very hot water, I think you'd be calling for help and getting to a hospital rather than finding very hot water. Haven't seen this movie but I gather I'm not going to be any fonder of these creatures when I do?

reply

I'd never even heard of them, but after watching this movie, I've learned than If I ever go to Australia, I will stay well clear of waters.

So this movie is unlikely to change your opinion much of them, no.

I watched this movie and must say I quite liked it. Although the guy's acting wasn't great I believe everyone has to start somewhere so didn't bother me too much.

You are right, I'm no fonder of these creatures after seeing the movie. Our waters aren't that dangerous, no more than anywhere else in the world. If you're on a patrolled beach & swim between the flags you'd be fine. So come on down.

Nope.....

Only vacationing in Europe for me. Sweet ole Europe, they killed off the majority of their deadly animals. So i can swim in the waters, and go throughout the wilderness without a care unless its Russia.

reply

There's no wilderness in good ole Europe, either. Unless it's Russia.

Don't get overexcited Euros. There's only been 1 death associated with stonefish in recorded Australian history (and no prizes for guessing it wasn't Coral).

Beth, upon being stung/stabbed, being a marine biology student, should have known to immediately douse the affected area with vinegar (an essential product in Australian marine first aid kits) to immediately lessen the pain. Granted she probably had no anti-venom. However she could have then heated some hot water and immersed the affected foot. The hot water may well have lessened the impact of the poison.

The stonefish fatality threat was played up to the max. in this movie.🐭

And yes when you thought it was safe to go back in the water the spiders and snakes will get you on the way to the beach :)
