investigation and legal proceedings

Isabelle's "cunning" plot would certainly fail at some point, if not at the very beginning. Anyone agrees?

Yes but no movie can really capture the subtleties and complexities of human deception without spelling it out unless they want to alienate all of the potential audience.

I'm not sure. If you think about it she made the police look sloppy and inept. At some point she knew they would find both scarves and the knife. Her confession would have been thrown out because she was heavily medicated, even though we find out she really wasn't. The police didn't give her a drug test so there would have been no way to prove that she wasn't medicated. Her plot was actually genius. Become the most obvious suspect, produce an airtight alibi, evidence that would vindicate her and then implicate someone else that the police believe tried to frame her.She also made it a point to be a bitch to the women that sold her the knife so that she she would be remembered and the women would come forth. I think she had all the bases covered.

Airtight alibi? A movie ticket? C'mon, have you ever seen a Columbo movie? A movie ticket is only proof that you have bought a movie ticket.

reply

@trixie She didn't just have the movie ticket, the person that worked at the movie theater saw her. I believe it was the person that took her ticket saw her.She made it her business to make sure he saw her face and remembered her being there on the night in question. It's not much, but it is an alibi.

Now we can handle this like gentleman or we can get into some old gangster sh*t

What I meant is that this is just as contrived as any other run of the mill film detective story. Nothing like that could ever happen in real life, in fact if she gave 100 thousand euro to the judge, that would make for a much more realistic story.

I thought it was a very good concept/plot. I can't think of anything offhand, but what other movie has the main character implicate themselves in a crime.

Agatha Christie used this idea in her very first novel, A Mysterious Affair at Styles. (Spoiler alert!)

reply

The problem with her strategy is that she didn't need to confess first. Why not just produce your alibi immediately? She still could have implicated Phillipe as the murderer. It made no sense for her to go through the whole charade of being guilty.

reply

@hermann IDK she was the most obvious suspect. By making herself look guilty, then being exonerated, and framing someoine else no one can ever suspect her again.
