Brian De Palma's Passion is the better film of the two

Just saw Love Crime after watching Passion and I tried to go into Love Crime realizing it would be different and not as stylized as Passion, but this movie just wasn't that good.

Love Crime is like a Euro soap opera: sterile, and poorly shot. While Love Crime and Passion have the same basic structure, the style, tone and execution are so drastically different.

Rachel McAdams and Noomi Rapace have better chemistry than the beautiful Ludivine Seigner and the talented Kristin Scott Thomas, Passion has a great musical score from Pino Donnaggio (love crime doesn't have a score at all), cinematography, suspense and most all...passion.

You really have a more fleshed out understanding of character motivation in Passion.

While Love Crime's basic plot structure is seen throughout Passion, De Palma built off that foundation and converted the story into a De Palma suspense/surrealistic thriller with a modern identity, very much set in world of today with the endless use of technology and how beneficial and destructive it can be.

I mean the split screen sequence with the ballet alone blows anything seen Love Crime.

Trust me guys, I really wanted to like Love Crime and if Passion didn't exist, I might not be so hard on it, but it's just so bland.

I suggest watching both films to see the differences, but for me De Palma's version is a great piece of filmmaking.

Love Crime is black coffee. De Palma's version adds the cream, sugar and a lot more.

Thoughts?

I think OP was too enchanted by Passion to see what a bad movie it is on its own - remake or not - and this unfortunately disqualifies him or her as somebody to make a sensible assessment of the original.

Let's be honest here, we all know why OP can't stand the original. He/she had to read subtitles and had to watch a lot of French people and that resulted in an obvious knee-jerk reaction to it.

Now the coffee analogy serves as a perfect example of how clueless OP is. Some people prefer their coffee black to taste the rich aroma of GOOD COFFEE and your average connoisseur of java will never do something as foolish as to dilute freshly ground beans with sugar(in this day of excessive sugar consumption no less) and cream. With the risk of coming across as condescending (albeit justifiably so) one can even say that those who have lots of cream and sugar in their coffee really can't appreaciate the taste of quality coffee.

"De Palma's version adds the cream, sugar and a lot more." Define "a lot more". What more could you possibly want in your coffee? Whiskey? To dull your blunt senses even more.

Now it's time to bring out the heavy artillery. While OP certainly has the right to praise any schlock the bottom line is that professional movie critics and the general movie going audience apparently failed to see the passion (pun intended) in this movie.

The critical aggregate on Rottentomatoes is merely 35% (21 out of 60 professional critics liked it) and when it comes to the Top Critics (the heavyweights in the business) it was an abysmal 16%, since 16 out 19 didn't like it.
The vote of the public is pretty telling too. 25%

The Imdb score is 5,3. That is also solely the (un)popular vote.

What about Metacritic then? 52 metascore from the critics and 4,8 user score.

Not exactly setting the world on fire is it?

In all fairness the original movie is an average drama, but the horrible remake elevates it to a position it otherwise wouldn't have. So you just keep adding lots of sugar and cream (and "a lot more") to your coffee cinematurd86.

Sorry OP, but I cannot even get through Passion’s movie trailer so I’m satisfied in having watched Crime d'amour in its entirety. Based on movie trailer comparisons alone, there is a noticeable style difference between both films and I much prefer the latter.

Oh, Dave. TOTALLY agree with your comment re: the stupid way IMDB orders it's comments.
It took me days before I figured it out.

that's one of the things i finally figured out also. even some free bb sites have better program for comments. oh well, imdb is still great for what it does.

sterile. that's a perfect way of describing this one.
