His wife was a selfish woman

The only appreciable thing she did was to tell her husband that she may have done the crime.

Otherwise she was concerned only about her son.

Due to her lame jokes, I wondered, whether she really deserves to be rescued.

She refuses to go with her husband after all he did for her especially when she knew the fact that there is no escape for her in spite of being innocent.

Worst of all she opens the door of speeding car after all that her husband did for her.

You could make the same argument about the Husband. He only cares about her, which by the way isn't really selfish if you are caring about someone else. Either way she didn't want to go with him because she was scared they would both be caught and then the son would lose both parents. That's not selfish but smart.

You as an audience member followed the husband through his experiences of planning the escape and going through all the hell which that entailed - but the wife did not, she sat in prison and knew nothing of what he'd planned and what he went through to carry it all out. It was sprung upon her when he comes into the hospital room with a gun. A gun? Her husband? This is THE VERY FIRST TIME she's seen anything remotely like that. It freaked her out and of course her immediate reaction would be to tell him to stop or he'll get them both killed.
