The Conjuring or The Babadook

Would like to hear the opinions here also, because at The Babadook board, it's a clear Babadook win, lol.

both relies on tension and real horror instead of cheap jump scares, well there is a scene in the babadook where it reminds me about the conjuring where the mother vomit when she was released from the babadook, both are smart movies with a very strong script and likable characters, while the conjuring is a real horror film, the babadook took the road of a psychological study to a mother who can't love her child and her husband death where the demon is a kind of inner,it was something really smart and unique but for me the conjuring is way better and more effective(i've gave the conjuring a 10 and the babadook an 8)

What are you talking about? The Conjuring was littered with cheap jump scares.

reply

The Conjuring is full of jump scares, ghosts, exorcisms, demons etc etc.

The Babadook has zero jump scares and if you get the movie you'll understand that it has nothing paranormal.

The Babadook IMO is much better.

Only one way of looking at it. The director intended it to work both ways so it can be seen either way, it doesn't add to or weaken the movie either way.

reply

I watched it for the first time a couple days ago and I honestly can't recall a single jump scare.

reply

How about the clapping hands behind the Mom when she's in the basement?
Really, there were many jump scares in this movie.

reply

I assumed jump scares had to be remotely scary/have even a slight amount of potential to make someone jump. I jump at tons of stuff from basically any genre of movie (i.e. the Chicken in The Good Dinosaur) and nothing was even close to doing that in the Conjuring.

Just finished watching The Conjouring.
It was entertaining but nothing you've not seen in a hundred horror films before.

I think The Babadook is far scarier.
Basically one character and her mental breakdown with supernatural forces. Reminded me of The Shining. The fear becomes almost palpable and you get so worried about her mental state that you'd almost forget there was a monster. And there's no stupid exorcism over the top effects cliche.
Just true fear and an ending that will make you question just what's happened.

that's odd man,if you really hate clichesand cheesy horror films, why you gave freddy's dead a 10??????????!!!!!!!

reply

There is nothing supernatural in The Babadook.

The Conjuring and The Babadook are by far the best horror movies in a long time. I don't know which one I would say is superior, The Babadook got closer to scaring me and since I'm not easily scared I found that to be very impressive (although it didn't genuinely scare me). The Conjuring takes all the known plot points you've seen from other horror movies and turns them into something fantastic. The Babadook is more original and it's more unique in general but The Conjuring offers that classic 60-70's style horror feel and has the best exorcism scene since The Exorcist. What was also great to see in both movies is that you like all the characters and you don't want to see anyone of them die.
The Conjuring also impressed me because nobody died at the end of it and everybody who's seen it seemed fine with that which was great. The Babadook leaves it more open ended and you are left to speculate what actually happened (which you can do with pretty much everything that happens, was there a monster/ghost following them or not?) but sadly I did feel The Babadook went through some unintentionally funny moments by the end but it's not enough to bring down the entire film.

Overall though... I gave both films a 9/10. They are brilliant films in completely different ways. The Babadook is original, features a performance by Essie Davis that totally rivals Jack Nicholson in The Shining and Anthony Perkins in Psycho, while The Conjuring takes what we've seen before and does a near perfect job at making a classic horror movie out of it.

The winner is... the type of horror movie you prefer to see.

I fell asleep in Conjuring but absolutely loved Babadook. Just depends on what you like and the mood you're in at the time.

And my experience was the opposite, though it still proves your point.

Well, I didn't actually fall asleep in The Babadook, but I didn't last past about half an hour. Not scared, not really bored, just ... well, unengaged, I guess. I might revisit it sometime soon. On the other hand, with The Conjuring I couldn't take my eyes off the screen.

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

I saw both in the theaters and I rate both of them 10/10. The Conjuring (2013) is in my top 20 and it's my third favorite horror movie. But, The Babadook (2014) is my fifth favorite movie. It also dethroned The Monster (1925) as my most favorite horror movie.

The Babadook didn't scare me at all. It looked like a children's ghost story. The Conjuring had a much better story telling.
