Given that the main character's love interest is Asian, I don't see how anyone could interpret it as such.

It's not any more racist than Red Dawn could be considered to be of Russians and South Americans. They had to have some kind of enemy to fight and in current times, Asians seemed the most fitting for the movie. It has to do with the current political climate. Not racism.

If they were white, nobody would ask "is this movie racist to white people". Guess what. They have to belong to some "race". You can't make the antagonists "raceless people".

reply

You beat me to it met76. I was about to write damn near the exact same thing. A majority of movies as well as TV shows today have the bad guys portrayed as whites, usually white men.
It really isn't even arguable, yet where are all the posts on "racist against whites"?
At least that would be a legitimate gripe as it's become so noticeable and prevalent that it has to be by design.
Anybody here who watches such shows as Law and Order, Cold Case, etc. will attest to what I'm saying.
It's gotten to the point where the mystery of who the perp is, is no longer a mystery, as 99% of the time it's the white guy.

reply

Sure it can, they can be aliens from another world!

reply

They are Asian because several Asian countries have openly talked about war with Australia, such as Indonesia and Malaysia. There are a lot of Asian political parties that rally in Indonesia and Malaysia against Australia.

reply

Ah that's a shame.

But main problem is our asian neighbours media, china included are sensitive bitches.

It's why the sequel will probably not get made.

I offer a solution, and that's to make the enemy japanese. The japs won't be that offended because auatralia and japan have great relations. Also our other asian neighbours will like this, since they don't like japan.

Or we could do what the red dawn remake did and make the invaders north korean.

is this movie racist to asian people?

It's disappointing the race card gets played on nearly every title here.

(sarcasm) The answer is no, since it was not an American movie.(/sarcasm) I doubt it is any worse than those that cannot use proper grammar and capitalization when posting troll-like threads.

As pointed out in this thread, one of the defending teens was Asian. Did you even watch the movie?

And you gave her a land mine? Really?
Well, it seemed appropriate at the time.

You are an ass. It was not a troll thread. So what if one teen defending was asian. The point is that the aggressors were shown to be asian. You are clueless!

And you are illiterate. Troll-like is not the same as troll. No matter who is in a movie, someone will come along and allege that it is racist because of it. Race card threads are almost as prevalent as "worst film ever" threads. Both often usually lack any factual basis.

Here's a fact (I'll even call it a clue- see, I have one): Seeing as how Australia is geographically closest to Asia, who else would invade them? People from the south pole? Africa? Did Germany bypass France and invade England?

Maybe you can contact the casting directors and get acceptable diversity in the next one they make.

And you gave her a land mine? Really?

There has to be some plausibility to the plot, despite all the books' defenders insistence the movie is all about the kids and not the enemy. But with that tunnel vision, why not make the invaders extraterrestrials as in, "War of the Worlds"? It would be just as valid.
If there is to be some modicrum of plausibility, then the most likely enemies of Australia are going to be its closest geographical neighbors, Asians. But in today's geographical political realities, few Asian countries have any real incentive to be enemies of Australia. Vietnam qualified until the end of the Vietnam War in 1975. Many Asian nations, specifically those allied with the United States, want, and need an independant, democratic Australia because Australia is still seen as the potential, massive forward logistical and staging base for American military forces should a massive war break out in the Far East. Red China is now the most likely bully in the region and every other country keeps the U.S. as an ace up their sleeve should things get nasty with Beijing. Towards mutual self-defense, Australia would be needed as an unsinkable aircraft carrier and military base for American expeditionary forces arriving from the eastern Pacific and American West Coast.

reply

Well, since the Sovjet the major antagonist on the war market is North Korea. So I guess they got inspired from that, also since the language of the film is made up it really could have been more than one country that invaded.
