nothing against

I have nothing against this film or Donnie, but He is to old to be playing Chen even if its suppose to be 7 years later, cause chen was suppose to be just out of school, 7 yrs prior...and Donnie is pushing 50

Donnie has rather aged well and looks at least 34 or 35. Jet was about 31 when Fist of Legend was made so I'd say the time/age differences between that and this movie doesn't make much of a difference.
Yeah, it's scary how these actors really seems ageless until they hit 50 or so... but's that make-up magic for you.

Donnie Yen might be older but I never liked the term "pushing 50" to describe a person's age. I think it's mainly due to the fact that only high school dropouts use that term. But I digress. Yen is only 47. It is not his fault that the producers cast him in that younger role. But hey, he is an accomplished actor and martial artist. Would you rather they cast Edison Chan instead. The guy can't act nor is an expert in martial arts, but the guy is young. Happy now? You really should be thankful that they did not cast Jackie Chan or have Jet Li reprise his role of Chen Zhen. Plus, considering the times that we live in were society wants to modernize everything I am really surprised that they did not get a woman to portray Chen Zhen.

Just happy to have another Donnie Yen movie.

like i said before i just feel he is to old, nothing against the guy at all i love donnie yen and would like to see someone who actually looks the age, and a kung fun background,i guess if i just watch as a kung fu movie, and forget the facts from the last movie......and yea i used the term pushing 50 big woop, and i didnt drop out of highschool, i dropped out of college though, but hey i make money and live on my own and enjoy life, no need to attack me cause i have an opinion.

no he looks old, he does not look like he is in his late 20s or early 30s like the chen zen character should be, he looks like he is going on 40 i give him that, but seeing the Fist of Legend or even Fist of Fury, both the same characters, both just got done with college, most people even back then were done by latest the 25, so 7 yrs later he should only be 32 yrs of age if in fact chen's age was 25 in the originals. Iam not doubting Donnie's ability to play or act the part, I just cant look at the movie as 7rs later ill just mis translate and think its 12yrs later that may be more reasonable.

I agree to an extent. Donnie will be masterful in this role, but the first thing that came to my mind after seeing the trailer was that he seemed too old to play Chen and this will be a little off-putting when I watch the entire film.

Can't disagree more: it's amazing how young he looks in the trailer... it's his acting-- or to be precise, his character-- that has really seems to have matured after seven years.

Obviously a result/reflection of what he went through during that time in the (WWI/European?) theater of war.

Considering that he played a twenty-something Dragon in Dragon Tiger Gate when he was 43... Chen Zhen is not such a stretch.

who cares. Donnie is not too old. He's an actor and martial artist and that's what people pay to see.

I avoid him because of his poor acting, hardly any improvement since he acted 20 over years ago. It's only recently that he got more employment since Jackie Chan aged and Jet Li stopped action roles.

If I go for pure action, I will stick to or the earlier Jet Li movies. Action movies today relied too much on editing technologies and camera tricks.

Anyway, I don't understand why people complained that he look too old for the role. Did the movie mentioned that his role is suppose to be 30 something or 40 ? It's a movie, so Chen Zhen can be even 50s this time. Who said a movie must be true to history ? Did anyone complain on the ending of Iglorious Bastards( or quite similar) ?

One should complain of his stone-faced acting(or non-acting) or even his similar actions in every movies, but not age-looking.

How about Wu Jing as Chen Zen? He's only 36 years old and looks like he's in his twenties.. A better casting choice? Maybe..

just saw the movie and he doesn't look too old to me. Check these screen-shots to see for yourself.

Well... I didn't see the first movie. I started with this one. So for me, at least, the age didn't matter. :)

reply

Well story wise Chen Zhen did spend a year fighting in WWI so you could easily say war and sorrow would have aged him prematurely so that he looks late 30-ish.
