Goon is the new Slap Shot

Sean Scott will be the new Paul Newman in Canada. So good

This is a fine film but let's not get carried away. Slapshot is a classic and still the better film.

From memory... or you have seen Slapshot, a second time, recently? Memory plays tricks, sometimes. Not sure that Slapshot is the best of the two, even if they are hardly compared, being so different.

As a 1970s-era hockey player I continue to love Slap Shot. After seeing Goon, I watched Slap Shot again with my wife and we came away thinking Goon was better. Our reasons included the more direct theme or storyline and a main character we cared about. I didn't get the same feeling with Slap Shot. There were many layers and things going on (that we didn't feel were compelling), and I didn't really "care" about any of the players, though I liked Paul Newman (coach). However, I thought Goon's Doug Glatt was presented as a bit too dumb, and there is no match for the Hanson Brothers characters from Slap Shot (I didn't "care" about the one-dimensional Hanson Brothers, I just liked watching their antics).

That being written, I believe Slap Shot is many people's default favorite hockey movie simply because it came along first, and it's difficult to unseat a champion.

In addition, I struggled whether to write, "...it was great and came along first..." For those who don't know the history, Slap Shot was widely panned when it first came out. For instance, the Hockey Digest threw up on it, basically labeling it an obscene and disgraceful representation of the game. That wasn't the NY Times, that was one of the top hockey publications of the era. It wasn't until hockey fans like me saw it for ourselves and over time we let our opinions be known. Goon is very different in that it received far more positive reviews from the start. Maybe this is because Slap Shot paved the way.

I disagree, maybe because I am pretty young but I seen Slap Shot a couple of years ago and didn't really think it was all that good but that is just my opinion. I did see Goon yesterday and thought it was very good, it was funny and had great fight scenes. It is probably just me but I think Goon is better than Slap Shot.

reply

It is because you are young. Slap Shot and Goon comparisons are very generational-based. Many older people who saw Slap Shot first have it as their default favorite hockey comedy. Those who see Goon first will have it as their favorite hockey comedy. It is very difficult for people to be objective.

reply

I saw Slap Shot first, and like Goon much more. I laugh so much.

reply

I thought Goon was average. Jay Buruchal's annoying character definitely knocks the movie below Slap Shot. I honestly didn't really ever laugh during the movie.

I thought Goon should have probably gone more into a dramatic movie instead of straddling comedy and serious sports movie.

Why isn't it the new Youngblood?

Pretty much the same ending.

reply

Slap Shot as a whole is better. But the hockey sequences shot in Goon are much better.

You know what, I agree! I stopped watching it within 30 minutes the first time I saw it on TV, but tonight it played again, and I was doing some computer stuff, and got hooked. This is one of SWS's best roles of his career. I must say, that Marc-André (a well loved and versatile Québécois actor) and Liev Schreiber put in excellent supporting performances.

This is not a genre that is high on my priorities, but in the genre, this one's lengths in front of the competition.

***So I've seen 4 movies/wk in theatre for a 1/4 century, call me crazy?**

Not even close! Slap Shot was funny, this movie TRIED to be like Slap Shot and failed. Also Slap Shot had more balls.

What does that even mean, "...Slap Shot had more balls"?

I have seen Slap Shot at least 100 times, ranks as probably my favorite sports movie, and comedy of all time. I just watched Goon for the 5th time in a month, and it is gaining. A really incredible movie...funny, violent, and perfect acting by all involved....Pass the Dutchie!!

Isn't it weird how every post ripping the movie the user has their blog address after it?! Like they are pissing people off just to get more hits?

reply

The only reason that there's a similarity between this and Slap Shot is because there's fighting and hockey. That's like saying that I Know What You Did Last Summer is the new Nightmare on Elm Street because they both have teenagers and stabbing. When I first heard about the movie I expected a Slap Shot ripoff, but they're two totally different movies that follow totally different story lines.

Goon is a very good movie and Sean Scott is decent but you can't put him in Paul Newman's class yet. Slap Shot is the funniest sports movie I've ever seen.

No sympathy for the devil; keep that in mind. Buy the ticket, take the ride.

Cool.
