Laflamme based on three NHLers...

In the Goon special features extras, Marc-André Grondin says he based Xavier Laflamme on three players still in the NHL. Who would you say those players are?

My obvious assumptions would be Max Talbot when Laflamme does the "shhhh!". I also read an article where Grondin says "I just imagined someone like Ovechkin, you know, really, like, him in a party with a bunch of bling and Ed Hardy. I Google image searched a lot of Alexander Ovechkin party pictures a couple years ago while trying to find the look..."

Who do you think is the third?

reply

He handles the puck just like Datsyuk.

He handles the puck just like Datsyuk.
Good call, I agree with you. The first time he handled the puck, I thought it was like the way Datsyuk moves.

reply

Datzyuk, maybe Crosby (I like to entertain that one for the whining)?

And just as overrated too. All flash, little finish.

I definitely see the comparision to Ovechkin.

There's a snake in my boot!

Now this is a thread that uses more than opinion disguised as fact. I learned something reading it, namely that the actor himself said he based his character on three NHLers, one being Ovechkin. There are others out there announcing the Ross Rhea character as being based on Marty McSorley or Frank Bialowas. However, interviews with the actor, Liev Schreiber, has him stating that he patterned his character after Bob Probert and Dave Schultz. So who should I believe, the actor or a poster on the IMDB?

I'd say based off style of skating and fighting. Doug was more like Bialowas and Ross was like Schultz.

reply

Oh, and one of the guys for Laflame was Pat Kane.

reply

I was 100% gonna say Kane...but Kane is USA and his biggest party bender came after this movie was released lol. Still got a Kane vibe though.

reply

Kane was bending girls over the Cup. Photos were taken

reply

I agree with all of the suggestions...as for Laflamme's nemesis (Ross Rhea), I am guessing that he was based on McSorley and/or Bertuzzi (the latter's on-ice attack that ended Steve Moore's career is now rather infamous in Canada - even among those who don't really follow hockey).

reply

In the book it's Bialowas...I needed to look it up.

reply

What about Alexander Daigle? Huge potential, wasted it all away on women, booze and strippers. Is also french canadian and they even look alike.

reply

I had no idea that he was based on hockey players, but when watching it last night for the first time, Daigle is the guy that crossed my mind. High draft pick, huge potential, french canadien, blew it all away acting like an idiot. Like the time he was crossing the border and told security he had a bomb in his bag. Had to miss a game because they held him at the airport for inspection.

reply

Ha, too bad Daigle couldn't turn it around like LaFlamme though eh? Sens fans?!

reply

That was the first thing that came to my mind: ALEXANDRE "BIG BUST" DAIGLE.

reply

Another thing about Diagle was that he was big on being the number 1 draft pick saying "I'm glad I got drafted first, because no one remembers number two".

When LaFlemme is drafted 2nd overall he holds his finger up and says "number 1!"

reply

First player I thought of was Kris Letang, based on physical appearance and the last name being a little similar. But there are definitely reasons to compare to Kane and Crosby and St Louis as well (don't get me started on St. Louis).

reply

Bertuzzi's attack was really a one time thing in his career and accidental (the ultimate injury I mean) and provoked. Not saying what he did was right, and this isn't the place for that conversation but Rhea is really nothing like Bertuzzi...

reply

He reminds me so much of former Mighty Duck Adam Banks

reply

His puck handling is definitely more of a Pat Kane style.

reply

To me LaFlamme totally reminded me Marty St. Louis.

Poor Lindros...

reply

I was thinking Pat LaFontaine. The name sounds similar and he took a few famous hits to the head.

reply

>>>Wasn't Lindros a pussy once he got concussions?<<<

No.

reply

The first player that popped in my head was Crosby with all of the potential, success, and subsequent concussion troubles. I agree that his style resembles Ovechkin, and I thought he skated a bit like Modano, too.

reply

Jay Baruchel said on the Marek vs Wyshenski podcast that Laflamme's personality and party boy lifestyle was based heavily off of Mike Ribeiro and Jose Theodore during their time with the Canadiens.

I figure the third is probably Alexandre Daigle in the sense that he was a high draft pick, tons of talent, and squandered it.

reply

Mike Ribeiro, Jose Theodore and Pierre Dagenais were called "The Three Amigos" back when they played in Montréal.

They were pretty popular in stripper joints all across town.

reply

A few of Laflamme's breakaway moves during the final game were Patrick Kane-esque

reply

Ross Rhea is based on Rob Ray.
