Why did it flop in Brazil?

Ok so this is not your typical blockbuster, but the movie is sinking fast in Brazil. Why?

Besides this kind of film (a compilation of shorts) not being very successful in the country, Brazilian native people are not as patriotic as you'd think. A film with a title like this has everything to be rejected in the entire country. Also, the marketing for it was very poor. It will most likely perform better outside Brazil. Speaking of quality material, I personally have to admit the screenplay was not the greatest though it is a good production.

Thank you. Your reply was very interesting. I have to say I'm still surprised to see it perform that poorly. I see the same thing is happening with Trash. It is sinking fast at the brazillian box office. I had high hope for that movie and hopefully it is better that the box office results suggest.

I liked Trash better than Rio, I Love You but I did enjoy both films. That is a very common thing to happen in here. I, for one, had to convince my friends to watch those films at the theater. In the head of our people, there's a misconception that a Brazilian film is always weak and poor compared with international films. So those are most likely to underperform in the box office until such thoughts are changed. I believe that is already happening though, slowly, as the industry progresses. Nowadays there are many more options of national films being offered in the commercial circuit than it used to, ranging from a much wider set of genres and plots.

Unfortunately I have to agree with the answer that says that we Brazilians are not that patriotic. Also this movie is really terrible. It's a shame! Some great actors so poorly directed and very weak plots. Rio is such a wonderful city. It deserved a better movie.

Just a few segments were great or at least entertaining, most were really weak. It's quite inconsistent and I can see why someone would rather keep their money and watch it later on tv/streaming. Honestly I will only watch it again if I skip the boring/annoying parts and that's it.

reply

I'm not Brazilian though, but one reason this film was a flop might be that it just wasn't very good.

The little phone booth kid was the best of all...and the ballet dancing.
