I thought it was an absolute chore to sit through and I have no idea what was supposed to be funny about this film... the volleyball match? the bit where the cardinals pray because they don't want to be chosen? the bit with the guard living in the Pope's room? the interactions between the cardinals and the therapist? The ending could not have been more anti-climatic.

arguably the best film to come out of Italy since Giuseppe Tornatore's Malèna (2000).
I couldn't disagree more. It's not even the best Italian film shown at the LFF this year (that would be Terraferma), let alone the best since Malèna (which doesn't hold a candle to Tornatore's following film The Unknown Woman).

I have to disagree. Sure it wasn't laugh out loud but slap the thigh chuckle-a-minute but there certainly was some funny moments. And the ending, far from being anti-climactic was actually deeply profound. It reminded me of the ending of Meek's Cutoff which left us with a similar question, 'Where are our leaders? Who is there to make the brave decisions?'
