Why was he taking pills and injecting himself?

Was it to fight better? I mean, I dont think one really needs to take steroids to become fit. The kid was already getting jacked from the training. Idk why he felt he needed to use steroids. Also, what was that white tablet he took near the beginning of the movie? O.o

The white tabs were either painkillers or antipsychotic meds.

The syringe was definitely steroids. With the beatings he was taking as well as all the training he needed the steroids to heal up quicker.

"No no no- don't tug on that... you never know what it might be attached to."
