Kubrick,lumet,welles and Hitchcock,among many others,never won a best director Oscar..the academy does not meet and decide by consensus,like some critics awards,nor do they open it to the public(thank goodness)..but they are subject to the same exposures to hype,sentimentality,and popularity..for example,hitchcock and Kubrick were not actor-friendly directors,and thousands of actors vote..in any case,as good as gravity was,2001 is a classic..one of the posters made a good point about some films being recognized as great years after their release,as opposed to right off the bat..other times,films are widely acclaimed initially,but buyers remorse soon kicks in..the artist and driving miss daisy would be 2 examples of the latter..more often then not,the academy gets it right,and when they get it wrong,they frequently make it up down the road..
