Wow--- much hate here... Why?

This is a beautiful, exciting ride - with tense and good actors.
The CGI is amazing - camera, sound, music everything - and the combination
of actors and animation was flawless. No sense of greenscreen - like in so
many big Hollywood films.

Best 3D in a movie. Of course there is little story - but why can´t people
just enjoy and get on the ride. I wasn´t supposed to be Shakespeare.

Watch the specials on the bluray and get a sense of how much work and effort
went into this film - how much love for detail.

Most fun and exciting movie of 2013.

Why can´t people just enjoy and relax ;)

I agree with most of your comments, but disagree about you saying "there is little story".

I think the biggest problem is how this movie was misrepresented. This movie is actually a Drama movie in space rather than a Thriller Science Fiction movie. If they had pushed it as such perhaps the appreciation would have been higher with fewer Star Wars, Alien, Apollo 13, 2012, etc. fans expecting something it was never intended to be.

I am not a fan of Sandra Bullock, but am a big fan of her work in this movie. This was more of a mental health type of movie than any kind of space survival battle.

EDIT* Oops! Instead of 2012, I meant 2001 as in 2001: A Space Odyssey.

reply

Thx for your reply.

"little story" wasn´t meant as criticism - of course there is Ryan´s character arc that holds everything together.
For me it had as much story as it needed and the actors filled it with life.

reply

I agree. Perhaps I misread your original post.

People on message boards don't know what they are watching. It was an amazing thrill ride!

reply

Exactly!

A variable that people rarely mention is viewing conditions. These days, a lot of people watch on their laptops (or worse, phones). Watching Gravity in 3D in a cinema, or home cinema, is not comparable to 2D on a smaller screen. It just isn't.

It requires full immersion for the true experience - which includes full attention rather than being distracted by a phone - as well as the ability to imagine and let go of your own rubbish to truly engage with the film. People can rarely seem to do either.

Watched properly, its a brilliant fairground ride experience of a film.

reply

Thank you!
This indeed is responsible for a lot of criticism on a lot of films these days. People are just cheap, watching bad quality versions on small (tiny) screens and then complain that it doesn't live up to their expectations, which are based on stories from people who watched it properly in 3D on the big screen and thus got fully immersed into the film in the way it was meant to be experienced.

This movie is terrible but it deserves more hate than normal terrible movies because it's so overrated.

Easy post for a troll.

There is nothing "overrated" in this movie. Six of the seven Academy Awards were for fantastic visuals and sound. The story was solid. It was likely above your mental capabilities.

reply

there are multiple things overrated in this film

the script - there isn't 'a story' to this film, getting to bare bones of it, it's an IMAX advert stretched out for 91 minutes

the main character - not only is she laughably over her head in space, I'd want to see where that qualification came from and look if it also came with a plastic decoder ring -responsible for atleast 3 deaths, maybe 5 and possibly 6 if her kid committed suicide to escape the mind-numbing life of having her narrate EVERYTHING she did

the trailer - this was sold as an astronaut drifting out into space, not only is she not an astronaut, she's not drifting through space or alone with her thoughts or facing certain death similar to The Martian, no she's rescued then proceeded to do an audio description of the film

two type of people like this film:

1) people who feel they should like it because they've been told they should
&
2) people who don't want to admit they've wasted 91 minutes of their life on a film with an unhappy ending

This shows that you have no ability to understand movies beyond your need to see low IQ shoot em up movies.

You didn't watch the trailer and failed to read the description about the movie. It clearly says she is a medical engineer on her first shuttle mission. She is NOT an astronaut beyond being a crew member. The trailer clearly shows her go into panic and start using up her air from the tank. The movie is essentially a mental illness drama played out in space, but that is obviously above your mental capabilities since it doesn't show space battles or aliens.

haha nice cast Jeff but fish are not biting

If you'll stop the childishness I'm happy to discuss this, though it does mean you having to accept that an educated person who does like a wide variety of films found this to be utterly terrible

If you can do that please feel free to reply
If not, have a nice life :)

reply

Hilarious. You create a garbage post with a comment like "there isn't 'a story' to this film" and then say (2.5 months later) that your comment was an "educated" discussion. Meanwhile you give "Dark Knight" a rating of "9" for footage that repeats a story that has been done over and over multiple times.

You have a "nice life too" if that is what you call it. I'll spend my time commenting in forums that contain movies I enjoy while you continue to troll IMDb and pretend you are some kind of hipster intellectual picking out all the flaws in the movies.

reply

I enjoyed this film, not because of it's story but more for it's visuals and the soundtrack. Seeing it in theaters during the final scene where she comes crashing back to earth, truly gave me chills. The soundtrack fitted the visuals so much that it was enough to dazzle me. Sure the story was *beep* but I never found myself bored or fed up with it's plot holes. Is this movie a masterpiece? No. Is this movie garbage? No. It was a decent movie that I thought was enjoyable. I understand that people think this movie is overrated but that's no reason to trash on a 'meh' movie when there is plenty of actually bad movies out there. Movies that were lazy and only made for cash ins. *Cough Death Race 2 Cough* I was never told to enjoy this movie and I was unsatisfied with the ending. Like i said, i got chills in the final stretch and thought it was the best part of the movie. I under stand that opinions are subjective but effort was put into it and it's clear that this was a passion project. I'm willing to listen to any feedback though.

Thank you.

Who did she kill?

reply

I liked the film because it got me immersed into it, feeling like I was there in space experiencing the terrible stuff going on there and thus I could easily connect with Sandra Bullock her character.

To me watching this film on the big screen in 3D was a fantastic experience. So I am not in either of your categories of people who liked this film. Case dismissed.

No you're wrong and you're the troll in this case.

The original statement is spot on: "This movie is terrible but it deserves more hate than normal terrible movies because it's so overrated."

Says the troll.

You are another one who doesn't even know what "overrated" means. Go back to your RED movies. They are more on your level.

reply

i didn't love it, but i didn't hate it either. first, i didn't see it in the theatre, which i know would have made me like it more. mostly, i did not connect with sandra's character. i just didn't really care if she lived or died. that is my main "problem" with the movie. but it was pretty good otherwise. i definitely wouldn't call it a masterpiece though...

reply

Thank you. You put all the trolls in their place. They can't appreciate this film because they were raised by the internet, and this turned them into trolls. Trolls like living under bridges. They also like living in basements. They also like hating everything that is not "epic." THAT BEING SAID (yes I am yelling), don't feed the trolls.

would you like
the nice answer?

the graphically brutally honest answer?

reply

Simple answer :

Haters gonna hate.

reply

I suspect it is due to people seeing it for the first time on their tiny tv screens in 2d.
This movie was made to be a visual 3d experience and that is how it should be rated.

would you not say that's a flaw, though? surely great films speak for themselves, not require massive screens and thousands of £ in equipment to make it appear more than it is?

reply

It's a movie that's very much built on visual themes, rather than a strong story line.
I'm not entirely sure why, but for some reason that gets some people entirely too angry.
I wish they did more with it story-wise, because to me, by the time I felt the movie got going, it was already almost over, but that's just a personal preference.

If you take it for what it is, a pretty stunning piece of visual imagery rather than a very story driven movie, there's really not much wrong with it.

reply

But story is important, isn't it? I understand why do you loved this movie but not every people have tests like you. When we watch a movie we expect more from it. Visual themes, dialogues etc. can not save a movie. I waited the full movie for some kind of turning point, some excitements but it ended without giving much. In the end I became so frustrated.

reply

Oh, I'm not criticising people for disliking it.
I'm not a huge fan of it either.

I just don't think the story argument works because this was always going to be a visually driven movie, and that's okay too.
There's plenty of room for those type of movies.

Story is important in story driven movies.
This just isn't one of those.

reply

But story is important, isn't it?
Like 2001? Aliens help apes. Man finds monolith. Man goes to Jupiter (or Saturn if one read the novel) Many a movie can have its plot reduced to a handful of sentences. Sometimes visual themes can save a movie.

Then there are other movies heavy with 'story' that attract hate... or at least indifference. Just the way of the world, I guess.

reply

Sometimes visual themes can save a movie.

Well, not many people agree with you. that's why so much hate.

reply

Not many people here, perhaps.

reply

Then why is someone crying "Wow--- much hate here... Why?"

reply

It's IMDB; there's always someone crying.
