What is this in relation to Monsters Inc. (2001)? Sequel, prequel, what?

I have yet to see this. Monsters, Inc from 2001 was one of my favorite movies as a kid. So I'm curious, what is this movie in relation to Monsters inc? I plan on seeing this sometime soon in the near future. Thanks.
