what was the bandit outlaw at the monastery?

I don't get it, in the book it was a bandit outlaw who stole their pig but in the miniseries it was one the members of the monastery. Why did he even do something like that? They show us him hitting a little girl on the head and then....wow....he has a soul, he rescued the baby. Wtf.

He was an Outlaw when he stole the pig. It is obvious from the way he dresses. Later when they leave little Jonathan we see him again peering through the side of a makeshift shelter which he shares.
He only joins the monastery after he rescues Jonathan
