What was your favorite scene(s) in Pillars of the Earth?

Mine:

In the miniseries:

When Alfred was kicking Aliena out of her (own) house, when Aliena tells Alfred that "[Sleeping with Jack] was the only true good thing I have done in my entire life", gives him a look like thunder, and walks away with her characteristic determination.

In the book:

Aliena catching up to Jack at St. Denis.

reply

In the miniseries:

-Tom's last moments with Jonathan before he dies.
-Fence building/Kingsbridge attack.
-Jack and Aliena's wedding.

In the book:

Jack's journey across France and Spain.

"We are as weak as we are divided and as strong as we are united."

Series:
1. The entire bit with building the wall, besting William, and the entire town celebrating.
2. Jack and Aliena's first kiss. She talked about loving her life as a merchant, he spoke about his art... and then a sweet kiss. I think that the actors had AMAZING chemistry.
3. Ellen lifting up her her skirt and taking a piss on Waleran... literally.

Book:
Haven't read it... yet.

The gif takes a little while to load, as I didn't mess with the quality at all (like an idiot), but it's by far my favorite moment from the series. Aliena's reaction to her first kiss with Jack literally took my breathe away the first time I watched it. She is just so gorgeous.

Off the top of my head in no particular order:

Ellen stabbing Waleran

Philip standing up to Waleran in the finale

Maud telling the villains that she'll have all six of their balls of a platter

Tom looking at the cathedral one last time

Regan killing the archbishop

Regan killing Percy

William practically getting KTFO by Jack's slingshot skills

I'll have to read the book again, its been a while. But for the series:

(SPOILERS!!!...Hey, you never know who hasn't finished it yet)

DEFINITELY Tom looking at the cathedral one last time. That was one of my favorite deaths in any tv show. It was a simultaneous parry, spit-in-the-face to Will, dismissal OF Will (and his significance), i-dot/t-cross, and Tom saluting his own life - all in a couple of seconds.

I hate to say it, but - from what I remember - William's death might be my favorite part in the book. If I recall, wasn't he tortured by the pain (mentally and physically) in the books before soiling himself? A fitting end to such floating feces.

I liked the whole series a lot but my absolute favorite scenes were those with the monk and the baby, all very touching.

"I'm running out of guys in the city Jerry!"

reply

I think for me it was the entire first episode. As a whole, it was amazing. I knew nothing of POTE and the book etc but omg did it draw me in ! I also love the side by side scenes with the babies/weddings/oaths etc. It was amazingly well done.

reply

I have to agree. Henry introducing himself to Eustice only to kill him was shocking and entertaining to me.

I wish though Maud would have been shown a little more because I loved how demanding she was. Threatening to chop off all six of their balls was brilliant.

reply

all the scenes between jack and aliena. i guess mostly the love scene and their journey back from france to england.

also loved the monk who adopted the baby. he was sweet later on in the series- although he also stole the baby and i could never understand why tom didn't just take the baby back (i guess in those times that's how things were done, but still..)

Tom didn't take Jonathan back for several reasons:

1. He abandoned a newborn baby to the elements. He could have been charged with murder if the authorities found out.
2. He had no way of feeding the baby. He had no money to hire a wet nurse.
3. The fact that Tom was now working on the cathedral site meant he'd see _more_ of Jonathan than if he hired a nursemaid because they were both in the priory every day. A nursemaid would have kept Jonathan at home and Tom would have only seen him in the mornings and at night.

I liked most of scenes with Jack & Aliena too, but I feel they were done a lot better in the book, so I was disappointed they weren't done the same way.

Miniseries:

Best part for was Prior Phillips rejecting Waleran's offer: ...but you... you do not have Satan's cunning..."

Didn't read the book.

reply

I pretty much loved any time Philip stood his ground, for any reason. I feel like the series watered down his integrity a little bit, so those moments were extremely important.

"Well!!! Since when did you become the physical type?"

I'm curious though . . . is this another anachronism?

I thought I'd read where they'd traced that "royal we" to some kind of training of Queen Victoria? Or have I totally lost my mind?

reply

Not to be too pedantic, but the phrase "Your Majesty" was actually coined by Henry VIII, some four hundred years after these events.

Just sayin'.

reply

I can't agree more with you! for me this is the best scene! I liked what Prior Phillip said such a great speech!

reply

I loved the scene when Waleran reminded Regan that she owed him a favor and her hand went tentatively toward his crotch. Waleran's expression was priceless.

reply

There are so many scenes I loved! Here are a few:

*Tom holding William's mount and demanding payment
*Prior Phillip and the other monks standing up to William and his thugs at the
quarry
*Regan killing her husband then a bishop
*Jack and Aliena's first kiss
*Waleran getting moved over the sheer beauty of the cathedral. It showed that
he wasn't a completely heartless b**tard
*King Stephen and Prior Phillip switch clothes and Stephen exposes him to royal
archers while they tensely negotiate
*Jack and Aliena reunite in France and Jack meets his infant son
