Extremely disappointing film
A brother and I just sat and watched this load of rubbish. After it was over, we both looked at each other and said "what...?" The brother felt that we had just watched a long trailer - it never really got to a point.
First, as a movie: The acting was disturbingly bad. Roger Guenveur Smith never raised his voice above a whisper, or at very best a mumble. I know that it is "de rigueur" in today's movies to have everyone talk like Dirty Harry, but enough. I could hardly understand him. And the "pensive, emo teenager" routine is so overdone its beyond cliche. Oh - and as I suspected, the ONLY Caucasians in this film were the bad guys. As a white Muslim I had to roll my eyes at that, but the makers of this film are not alone in this stereotype. Hollywood as a rule will only portray Muslims as either black or with a middle eastern accent. The film bounced from "current" to "flashback" in such a way that initially it was difficult following the story.
Now, the Islam: Within 45 seconds of the film I was already turned off, after watching father & son both wipe their face after making dua'a (supplication). I am thinking that the Muslim adviser for this flick must have been a Warith Deenian because the hijab were horrible, peeled back just far enough to show throat and earring. The roommate alone in a room with his "intended"? If she weren't his "fully wedded wife" that scene should not have been in the movie. A Muslim man and Muslim woman are not ever - should not, I should say - be alone together without her male relative. But I guess the adviser for this movie didn't know that part?
I came in to the film as a Muslim and as a movie-goer and was disappointed in both aspects.
