I understand why they omitted... (SPOILERS)

I understand why the film adaptation omitted the strong implications in the book that Robertson's wife divorced him because he may have molested his daughter (after all, how many people would want to watch a movie where the main character, scuzzy as he is, is an incestuous child molester?) but why did they change the race of the murder victim and make it that Robertson wasn't the killer? In the book, the entire reason why Robertson kills the black exchange student in a depraved, violent outburst is because his wife left him for a black man.

I think just because it didn't fit in the film. they wanted to keep the black cuckold stuff as a hinted at and revealed thing. and focus on the 'bad cop' aspect of the character.

a film is much shorter than even a short novel, and it works differently, so some things that work well in books need to be changed for film, it's not really fair to compare them. although people love to do it for some reason.

It's been a while since I read the book but I don't remember the hints that he molested his daughter. Where does that come up?
