Stewart Comparisons

Interesting to compare Stewart's work in this and the much earlier version with Derek Jacobi. In that version about the only thing he got 'right' was the soliloquy. Here, being much older and more suited to the role, he gets it right...except for the key moment, when Claudius is revealed as a murderer (in the play scene). In both versions the moment is almost lost totally. And here, when he is finally killed, he just shrugs the moment off. As an actor, I understand the choice, but I don't really agree with it, as the moment comes off a comic. It certainly loses something when Hamlet does not skewer him, as he does in most other versions. Anyway, I highly recommend seeing the Jacobi version as his Hamlet is one of the best ever. The first I have seen that gives the character true dimensions. Here we just have Dr. Who playing Hamlet with Tennant's usual tics and quirks. Not bad, but not a great Hamlet.
