Monsanto in India

I heard some time ago that Monsanto's patented seeds, which are much more expensive than normal seeds.. are part of the reason of this suicide epidemic in India.. After seeing this movie and a name similar to Monsanto mentioned, it seemed that they are somehow connected. Anyone heard about it?

I have read about it a lot. Farmer suicides in India specially Andhra and Vidarbha region were of epidemic proportions till last year, largely due to high seed prices by Monsanto which gave pathetic returns when the rains failed. You should see the interview of P. Sainath on youtube where he lambastes the media for its role in this issue.

don't know about the relation between Monsanto and Farmer suicide in India, but i do know that they have patented a variety of corn seed in the US which is resistant to insecticides and are used by all the farmers now the catch is that each year the farmer has to buy the seeds from monsanto for growing and if they go for the earlier method of storing seeds for sowing the next year, then monsanto has a dedicated investigating team of 75 detectives who would get the details of the farmers and sue them, so each year the farmer has to buy from them.

Monsanto has also modified these seeds so that the plants do not produce new seeds. This is to ensure people have to buy new seeds every time they plant a crop.
