Why would the trilobyte be so big?

There are many things about this movie that are annoying and just run wild - and ruin - some Alien logic and lore. The creation of the creatures, for example. The trilobyte is essentially a facehugger. OG facehuggers are the size of a small dog tops, but this one is as big as an elephant. What reason could there be for that?

Just to kill the engineer I guess. Most of this movie doesn't make sense.

"Most of this movie doesn't make sense."

I was willing to ignore the fact that the "Engineers" were significantly shorter than the Space Jockey and the Space Jockey was clearly not wearing a suit. That THAT was their body. I was willing to ignore the fact that the Space Jockey in the original was fossilized and this movie was only 29 years before Alien.

But the bad acting, the fact that there were no scares or tension, and - as you put it - the fact that it doesn't make sense can't be brushed off. Why does the black goo melt Engineers down to a molecular level, but transform humans into what I assume is a xenomorph? Why do yo need eggs - the classic xenomorph lifecycle - when you can just throw black goo on people? It's just so fucking sloppy.

All I can say is... you should have been here when IMDB hosted the forums. This group was a warzone between fans of the movie and those who scorned it. Questions like yours were raised many times and have never been answered with any level of satisfaction.

Yeah, Ridley didn’t think it through well enough. What irks me as a fan is that you’d think he would have.

Makes me think that he just got lucky with the original. Producers had to fight him on decisions that were best left unrealized.

Ridley definitely has a great eye behind the camera, but he didn’t do the series any favors by wedging himself so deeply in the lore. Just my opinion.

I was an IMDB regular. I don't know if I'm confusing it with another board, but swear I remember some guy adamantly defending the movie.

I just don't know what Ridley and the writers were thinking. The black goo is one of the worst a mcguffin's i have ever seen.

I think the most recent posts on the IMDB boards were carried over onto this site. There were a few posters adamantly defending the movie beyond the point of ridicule. Pimpsqueak aka Frogarama was the worst.

Agreed. Its effects are soinconsistent it's a joke.

Frogarama!!! I did not remember his name, but once you said it, it all came rushing back!

I didn't even mind the implication Jesus was an Engineer - I like when religion is given a real-world base explanation - but the black goo, lack of tension and scares, and bad acting just kill it.

And for that, I must sincerely apologize.

Landing on a planet that's been dormant for 2000 years and getting themselves killed (plus 1 engineer) within ~24 hours did it for me.

Evolution starts big and it's going small it's more efficient and economical, this happens all over the Animal Kingdom.Ancient animals were bigger Smilodon/Sabertooth was way bigger than the bigger tiger 🐅 today(Siberian)or the Megalodon shark compared with the modern day White shark 🦈 that's the logic for the huge facehugger...I dig it. Plus it was epic cinematically

*yawn* here we go again. It was constrained to the medi-lab. What did it eat there to grow so big?

reply

The black goo is like a super anabolic substance the nutrients it got from Shaw were enough for it to grow exponentially and maybe this was not its final form. Also Holloway after he turned a xenozombie he had super human strength how does that work ?It's the black goo IMO it's an alien bio super weapon so... You know the Xeno in the original didn't have much to eat too and it went from the size of a small snake to 2.5 metres in 24-36 hours so GTFHO

reply

The facehugger has one goal: to impregnate a host so that the deadliest life form in this universe has ever seen can be born and do it's thing. The xenomorph is the main event. But this thing - for no reason whatsoever - is bigger than the actual bio weapon. Facehuggers don't keep growing. They're not the weapon, they're the delivery method.

The Deacon actually gets enormous it makes sense that its facehugger is enormous too. Search the lore/ expanded universe of Alien/Prometheus more before you post your stupid thoughts ...https://www.dimensions.com/element/deacons-alien

Speaking of stupid, there's referencing "dimensions.com" as a source and using "read the EU" as a talking point.

A well-written movie shouldn't need supplementary notes to paper over the plot-holes.
