Specially after its sequel.

Yes, I thought it was fantastic until Covenant came out, and then I realized Prometheus was a masterpiece.
shareNot really. Both Prom and Conv were both interesting at the cinema but upon second viewing they both feel like there can still be something better to come in the Alien universe. I haven't been motivated to watch either any more than once since they came to home media months after the cinema viewing.

shareAgreed. Not sure why they had Damon Lindelof re-write Jon Spaihts's script. Spaihts's script was essentially the same story, although much better than the one the producers went with.
shareI kinda liked it when I first saw it. But now I can't make it through it. I always end up thinking of something else to do and shut it off.
The 3D is still some of the best though

That is an interesting question. In a way I changed my mind, because even though
I hated both of them they were follow-ons to movies I liked. They were so fake,
which I guess I accepted in Alien, but then Alien's seemed to be more realistic and
well done. But Prometheus made no sense. You should not have to read a bunch
of articles of interviews with Ridley Scot, or watch everyone's You-Tube video to
figure out what happened in a movie ... and of course all of the explanations do not
make sense - because they movie did not make sense.
They made sure of that. The guy at the beginning whatever he was that drank the
weird goo that was supposed to NOT be the same as the goo later on in the movie,
and then it ripped apart his system and the made sure that we all saw the zoom in
on the DNA helix - and it get dried ... but then this dead and fried DNA is supposed to
seed this new world, but this new world had nothind to do with Earth, or with the
planet Prometheus later landed on.
Not to mention the miscreant robot David and his murder of a crew member, and his
going insane - to be picked up later in the next movie. Robot turns into a psychopath
murderer.
All too much, very bad writing, plot did not make sense, characters were terrible, the
premise that there are common things in archeological digs around the world we
already know is BS.
No, I hated it when I saw it, I've seen it a few more times since then and I still cannot
stand it.
And the bottom line is that anything written by or touched by Damon Lindelof is going to be pure garbage.

Actually, if a movie is meant to be cryptic or mysterious, YES you may have to do research to "get" it. Cue David Lynch's entire body of work.
As for Prometheus, it was pretty clear to me the first time I saw it, and most others had the same experience. Seems like the only ones who say "no sense" are the ones who just want to know every little minute granular detail and complain that the movie isn't a pop-up video like on the old days of VH1, basically.

That planet had everything to do with Earth. It represents primordial Earth just as much as it represents any planet they might seed with life.

Same as Ash (who tried to kill Ripley with a porno magazine, which is ridiculous)... Hell, in Aliens, Bishop even makes a disparaging comment about the older models like Ash. David is even older.
Actually, robots going mad is a very common story element. 2001, Matrix, Terminator, Demon Seed, Westworld, I Robot, Blade Runner (bio-robots though)...
Do they all get the same criticism you listed here?

That is so unfair and such BS. First, who says I "just want to know every little minute granular detail and complain" ... that is your own made up perception. Then you box everyone who doesn't think the movie makes sense, even though just about anyone can go through the movie and write down the contradictions in it and they are documentable. The movie is ridiculous because the characters in it do not behave like rational intelligent human beings, but also for lots of other reasons - it is objectively senseless.
You have to defend this movie, which is weird enough, but you do it by attacking me personally, which is BS.

i think it's insultingly bad in some ways, in its silly creationist/chariots of the gods plotting, & its hokey characters & silly geologist & things that don't really make sense to me.
yet i've watched it a bunch of times. more than i've watched any other aliens movie except the first one, i bet (i might have watched aliens more, but i didn't keep a firm count on this sort of thing, at least not until i started using letterboxd).
if i watch a movie again & again, and have what i can only describe as a good time when i'm watching it, even if i like to say i'm hate-watching it, i can't really, truly say i dislike the movie, can i?

I felt that way about Antichrist, I really specifically disliked it but then couldn't get it out of my head.
3 months later, after recommending it many times, I realized I really liked it. I also accepted that the things I hated about it were intended to create that reaction, because it's an ugly story.
Prometheus is very similar... The things people hate are intentional. The things people find confusing are intended to confuse the viewer (as the characters are confused too!). The things we don't know, we are NOT supposed to know.
It's less a straightforward narrative than it is a symbolic piece, just like any Alien movie. I suppose Aliens was the most basic and straightforward of the series. share
I saw no symboloism in any of these movies ... because in order for symbolism to be a thing it has to be suymbolic of something and making some kind of point ... not just tweak those in the audience who want to attach emotionally to it for irrational reasons.

The things people hate are intentional.
Err, no. Stupid stuff like the previously terrified duo in the cave suddenly petting a clearly hostile space cobra is lazy writing - making inconsistent characters to rush the plot forward. Same with Vickers not turning left or right when a giant donut spaceship is about to roll on top of her - they make a previously intelligent character retarded because the plot needed her dead (in spectacular fashion) and the writers were too stupid/lazy to cook up a scenario that killed her off and maintained her intelligence.
Let’s also add a professional expedition team removing their helmets in an unknown alien environment. This is sub B-movie level writing and should no way have made it to the final draft. It’s crap.
Which is all the sadder because there’s much to enjoy about Prometheus and it spoils what could have been a great film. share
I'd rate that as manipulative. They do brain studies now, figuring out how to "vex" the viewers so that they are obsessed with finding meaning. They have moved from story telling to manipulation and propagandizing viewers.
