Jacks origin

Disappointing. Too short. And falls in the ice. That's it. I can understand him dying but he didn't seem to try to swim up

yeah, I wanted to know a little more about Jack's past and background, they didn't show much...they just showed that Jack had a little sister and he fell through the ice, that's how he drowned and died. Yeah it did seem like he didn't even try to swim up...that's the part that confused me, why didn't he try to swim up? He probably would've lived if he had swam up...but then again, he wouldn't have become Jack Frost if he had lived then, and there wouldn't be a story. I suppose that's why they showed him not trying to swim up when he fell through the ice.

He did fall into freezing water. When the body is subjected to cold temperatures like that so suddenly, it usually shuts down. Depending on the person and outside influences someone might survive long enough for help to arrive or save themselves, but that luck wasn't in the cards for Jack.
Besides, like you said, if he hadn't drowned there wouldn't be a story. Sometimes there just needs to be a slight suspension of belief in order for a story to happen.
