This dude doesn't even make real cakes... TOTAL BS

Seriously, plywood and PVC pipes AREN'T EDIBLE INGREDIENTS! This show is *beep* *beep*

Neither are the pillars and base boards of any tiered cake you buy. Unless you're buying a cake that's less than about a foot tall, you can expect to find supports inside the thing to keep it from falling over or collapsing under its own weight.

If you just want something that you can eat and nothing more, buy a sheet cake. The only difference between cake boss cakes and a wedding cake is that the support pillars and cake bases for a tiered cake can be purchased at any kitchen supply store, where as they make their own custom supports on the show for the various wacky things they create.

bakeries like this also give you fresh sheet cake to eat. If you are spending hundreds sometimes thousands on a custom cool cake, that only part is edible, they give you enough sheet cake to feed the party... its the same with wedding cakes, a lot of wedding cakes are Styrofoam except the layer you cut, and in the back there is precut slices for people... its just the way it is.

Woah...I actually never knew that. I am not a seasoned wedding guest but the ones I have gone to I always wondered "damn how did they cut this cake so fast?"

reply

I also never knew this. But it's actually the smart way to do it - just think of the time to cut that many pieces of cake for that many guests - and be sure each piece is the same size...

It makes me enjoy this show even more.

That's good, because who wants to heat their "fancy" cakes when they've been handled so much? I cringe when I see their bare hands forming and decorating the cakes.

I find it hard to believe that a lot of wedding cakes are styrofoam or some sort of model. I'm 25 and in no wedding I've been to in my life have I seen a fake cake. I've seen multiple cakes--one super nice decorative one that the couple slices and then others that are fancy, but not as intricate. Multiple people cut up all the cakes in view of the guests--even the the central couple cake.

The PVC pipe framework is called an armature and they have to use it to make 3D cakes or else there would be no way to make them at all. You can't make arms and legs out of just cake, they would never stand up. All cake shops that make large cakes and 3D cakes use plywood bases and armatures. They also use galvanized pipe, heavy wire and many other things that come from a hardware store. If you watch Ace of Cakes they do the same thing. You can also see the same thing done of Food Network Challenge and other cake competition shows and chocolate competition shows.

It sort of feels like cheating though. While this is a general practice when making these cakes, people who aren't in the business of making cakes might not know this.

It's not the same as being a cake artist when more than half of your materials aren't cake. I feel like a lot of the time the cake is secondary--they're just covering a machine or sculpture with a layer of it.

Like the aquarium cake or the car wash one--a majority of those weren't cake or even edible.

The fondant, rice crispy treat, and modeling chocolate is another problem--it's basically like using clay. It's not much of a challenge to construct or represent something when you can use such an easily shaped or carved material.

The artistic part of the cake is hardly ever cake or incing--it's all these other things. I don't want to pay that much for a cake and have 70% be either terrible-tasting fondant and modeling chocolate or plywood and wires.

Their work requires skill and effort, but I'm not impressed by any of it. I'd much rather see a beautiful, modest-sized cake that's made of cake and icing than these fondant coated junkyard monstrosities.
