FAIL!! Movie is so complicated, couldnt enjoy it *SPOILERS*

I am 1/4 Chinese & watch Asian films daily(to give u an idea), but this one is way to complicated. I've NEVER seen a Asian film we had to give up on. It's not a low budget film but like some of Donnie's other films, it's not that good either. IP Man & Assasins and BodyGuards were GOOD, tho.

Anyway - we've rewinded the movie 5,6 x's already in attempts to understand the first 50 minutes to no avail. And trust me, it's no fun watching any film that far w/o being able to understand whose position is what & whose on whose side. And the only reason we assumed Donnie's was the good side, is b/c he's the star. They dont give us a hint in that dept either! WE let it go that far & even wrote down names to help us catch on...but THAT didnt help =(

Tuo Tuo comes in like the life saver but turns out to be working against Donnie. Matter of fact, her father doesn't even explain enough for the audience to understand exactly what he's after & what he's sending his daughter on mission for...FAIL.

We assumed Donnie's was the Imperial side.

Tuo Tuo was the step-daughter of Sammo Hung's, who had once tried to revolt but failed. Now after the intro scene he summoned Tuo Tuo and asked her for help with another revolt.

Yes, agent, you are right..that is what happened. And how she always located Donnie's character & popped up out of no where during everybodys fight is beyond me. Better yet, how she got out of the middle of the desert w/ no horse, water or food. I attempted to watch it again being a friend had it on DVD. The problem was that someone behind the film needed to take a whole course in story-telling on film. Also, too many important things went unexplained during the entire course of the film, till the very end, leaving the viewer dismayed & confused & simply going w/ the flow.

Vicky Zhao again, did what she does best, stand there w/ this dumb look on her face everytime the main character in a film tells her to do an important task. Or, she does the total opposite & gets ppl killed, maimed or wounded, while angering the audience. How she scores so high in China is beyond me. She is the most drab, unattractive actress in Asia till this day. Never any chemistry between her & her co stars, as others also stated on Asian boards, smh

I had no problems to understand this movie at all. About good or bad side... well there is none really. The movie tries to give credit to both sides, which is unusual for this genre and maybe that is why you were confused. But it's quite clear where the audiences sympathies are supposed to be directed to mainly.
Anyway, this is in no way a complicated movie. I don't know what kind of movies you watch on a daily basis, but I can assure you that I watched this movie, because I wanted to be entertained by a straightforward and simple movie and to me it was just that.

I think the movie had a whole bag of issues. The plot was messy, but the characters were pure crap. Tuo Tuo's abilities are out of place and her character was as shallow as a puddle. I felt no sympathies for anyone and couldn't logically relate to any of them.

A lot of the actors were miscasts. What looks like a pop singer as a desert judge? Surely they can do better.

80's and 90's Hong Kong period films were so much better than these modern ones. The awful CGI made my eyes bleed and gave these films a very fake and over-produced look to it. Outside of Red Cliff, everything else looks awful.

Tuo Tuo was ridiculous. What does it take to kill that bag of *beep* A low-yield tactical nuclear strike?

reply

yeah a little more straightforward and it would have been great, but not that its bad.

I think the key to understanding this film is the secret service agent (jin yi wei) that really existed -- that's what it is depicting, basically.

The agents were recruited to inspect and get rid of so-called "bad officials" (now the definition of "bad officials" depends on which side the emperor or those who holds the real power was on). Historically there were 3 agencies -- Dong Chang, Xi Chang and Neixing Chang, the former was established much earlier than the latters. The time in the film is obviously the period of time when a evil eunuch called Liu Jin held power, when all 3 agencies were already working. The 3 agencies each included thousands of jin yi weis, and were used to inspect people's talks and writings, and among all, Neixing Chang had the most power -- apart from inspecting officials and peasants, it could also directly inspect the other 3 agencies. Different emperors (or power-holders) trusted different agencies, and that's why it was a major problem in the Ming Dynasty, and why in the film Xuanwu and the eunuch wants to get rid of Qinglong, Baihu nad Zhuque. It was only until after Liu Jin's death that Xi Chang and Neixing Chang was eliminated.

This is the first movie in a LONG while that I thought to myself, about half way in, "I have absolutely *beep* ALL idea what's going on". Terribly mediocre, all round, too.

Personally, I really liked this movie.
A little bit complicated at the beginning, a lot of Chinese names, hard to remember. But it becomes quickly and easily understandable.
Fight scenes are awesome. And so do Donnie Yen and Chun Wu !

I almost fell in love with the movie :p
