DONATOS PIZZA (never heard of them) Oct. 11, 2013

The undercover boss gets put on the drive-thru window. She says when she started working in their restaurants, they didn't have them and she follows up by saying that drive-thru windows are very new for the pizza industry.

She's crazy... What major pizza restaurant hasn't had a drive-thru for at least 30 years? Except for a very few in a strip mall location, every pizza restaurant I've been to has had a drive thru for at least 25 years, many of them since the early to mid-80s, more than 30 years... so 30+ years ago is a "new" thing?

I think they are only in some of the middle east region towards Virginia and some in the southeastern region of the U.S. Coming from California to Kentucky, I see many of them here. In fact, my neighbor owns a few of them in this region. I really do not like their pizza. Their crust is thin and crunchy, not really my texture for a pizza. Mad Mushroom is boss!

Now to answer your questions, maybe not her chain. Since Donatos started out in Columbus, chances are they were very old school and even with her age, I am thinking she is like late 40s, early 50s they did not have drive thrus. I know all the Donatos in Kentucky have drive thrus. Mad mushroom does not have a drive thru. Some pizza huts and Dominoes also, in Kentucky, do not have drive thrus either.

Was it just me or did all the people in Columbus, OH, with the exception to the black gal, seem stoned? It seems like all the White people in Columbus are stoned. O_o Just what I saw. Their general conversation patterns were not normal, lots of pauses and emotional expressions.

Better watch out, better start crying. Better hurry up, run and hide. Krampus is coming to town! >:)

There's a Pizza Hut in my hometown that does not have a drive-thru. There's also a very small pizza building (that gets tons of business from people calling their orders in and coming to pick them up) that does not have a drive-thru as well, so I think it's believable that Donato's didn't have one at some point in the past 30 years.

Don't tell me that. Tell that to the original poster! lol

I've never heard of a drive thru pizza place. I don't think people here in the NY/NJ/PA area would approve either. Is that a west coast thing?

Pizza places deliver and if you'd rather pick it up yourself, you just call it in for pickup.

You mean Marco's Pizza?

That place is also within five miles of my house, like Donatos. They serve pizza and they specialize in their crust. They have three different flavored crusts.

I live in Warren Michigan which is a suburb just North of Detroit. I don't remember ever seeing a drive thru pizza place. Even the places that sell a lot of single slices don't have them.

Well, for one thing, many major cities that have good pizza mostly serve people who are walking or using public transportation.

I don't live in a major city, but I can tell you my experience living on the East Coast and MidWest. When I left the East Coast in 2005, there were no drive through pizza shop chains or mom and pops. Most of the mom and pop places were restaurants where people usually dined-in but also offered delivery. If someone came there, they were eating there. Most chains did delivery and had walk-in pickup.

I moved to the Midwest in 2006, and Donatos was the only chain place.. and still is.. that had a drive through window. There is 1 local place that built one recently. Pizza Hut, if people go there usually eat in. Dominoes is all strip mall locations in my area, and they all have seating now. Papa Johns is all walk-in. Other local chains and independent places mostly have table service with servers, and most people actually sit down and eat, have beer, watch sports, etc. They usually offer delivery, and that's what most people do when they eat it at home. I only do pickup because most of these places are 2-3 miles from my house, and the delivery fees have skyrocketed, I always tip at least 5 bucks or so. So, it's more convenient for me to just go pickup a pizza (usually walking to a counter) from the chains. It's faster and costs at least $8 less. I have used the Donatos window.

About 98% of the pizzerias around me in the PA/DE/MD area don't have drive-thru. The only two I can think of are Pizza Huts, and Pizza Hut sucks.

This is a big country, things aren't the same everywhere.

OP, I'm an old fart who's downed more pizza than the average bear and I've NEVER seen a pizza place that has a drive thru. This includes the Scanton Pa area, and in New York the Binghamton, Syracuse, Albany, Elmira and Rochester area. Oh, I am sure there are some, but I doubt any of the big chain places have one.

I am also sure that in some regions of this country they may be prevalent (hence your post), but remember, just because something is common or "the way it is" in your area, does not mean it is common everywhere.
