For those who have read the book

Is this pretty close to the original novel?

reply

I haven't made it to the end of the film yet, but almost-and so far, for anyone wondering, yes it's pretty close.
About as close as you could get really, an amazing adaptation of an unusual book.
I wouldn't have thought they could or would even try to adapt it, bit it's very well done.

Plotwise, yes. The novel has more backstory, particularly about Renee and goes into more detail for secondary characters and has some minor characters altogether absent form the film, and the film added a few minor things, and in the book Paloma is writing a diary instead of taking videos but, again, in terms of plot they're essentially the same, and generally I think the director did an excellent job in choosing what to include and what to leave out.
In terms of characters, there are more differences. Paloma is basically the same character, although in the book she seems more arrogant. With Renee, however, there are more differences - I didn't find book Renee entirely believable, and I also found her significantly less sympathetic than film Renee - book Renee seemed arrogant and bitter. This is one of those rare exceptions where I'd say the film is better than the book, though if you liked the film I would recommend the book anyway.

I would agree, one of rare exceptions where the movie is better than the book :)

I haven't read it - BUT does anyone know why Paloma in the book is a 12 year old planning to commit suicide on her 13th birthday while film Paloma is an 11 year old?
