In addition to what everyone else has stated (which I'm mostly in agreement) I just want to add:

RetarDEAD

I also really liked Edges of Darkness.

Hey, I just watched RetarDEAD this morning! :-D

I think my favorite zombie flicks would look something like this...

1. Day of the Dead

Cuz it shows what happens after the initial outbreak, some months (longer?) down the road. Resident Evil: Apocalypse is my favorite RE movie for the same reason, but can't hold a candle to Day of course. I also love how the personnel in their underground facility is kind of a microcosm of society, with nearly all important elements present: transportation, defense, science. The special effects are top-notch, the gore is plentiful, and on top of that, it has a solid intellectual backing. I've heard complaints that there's too much dialogue, and I guess there might be compared to Dawn, but that's how ideas such as extinction, survival, morality, ect, are discussed. I just wish Romero had the budget he wanted for it!

2. Day of the Dead 2: Contagium

Just kidding, haha. Never seen it and never will. The remake was bad enough. No, #2 would probably be Night of the Living Dead ('68), not just because it's a great, gritty zombie movie, but because it was the first, and will always be a - not just zombie - but horror classic. I couldn't believe the effectiveness of that film when I first watched it, and was baffled that it came out in 1968.

3. City of the Living Dead

Fulci's best flick, imo. I know there's not the metaphors like in Romero's pictures, but this movie was dripping with atmosphere, and has the most coherent story of his zombie flicks (probably not saying much). And, yeah, I really dug the gore. Whatever happened to maggots??!

4. Braindead

The first zomedy I ever watched. Actually it might have been the first zombie movie I ever watched (not counting Thriller). So incredibly over-the-top in parts. It opened me up to new kinds of humor I wasn't aware existed. I still die laughing everytime I watch that zombaby-in-the-park scene. The movie worked incredibly well within its restraints. Peter Jackson obviously likes zombie movies, and instead of trying to compete with something like DOTD, he poked a little fun (and had a little fun) at them.

5. Rec

What can I say, I think it's going to be a new zombie classic. I was genuinely scared at parts, which, unless we've forgotten, is what horror is all about.

6. Let Sleeping Corpses Lie

This is just as good, if not better, than Zombi 2 in my opinion. Not a whole slew of zombies in it, but that's not what the story's about. An underrated classic if you ask me.

7. Shaun of the Dead

Brilliant!

Others would be...

Zombie Diaries - better than Diary of the Dead?
Undead
Return of the Living Dead
Cemetery Man
Planet Terror
Dead Snow

Microbudget zombie flicks I like...

Die and Let Live - funny, funny. Interaction between the two main characters is reminiscent of Clerks.
Special Dead - retarded zombies. Come on.
Day X - I love how it just rushes directly into the apocalypse. Also seems realistic. One of my favorites.
Evil, or To Kako
Stink of Flesh
Plaga Zombie
Dead Moon Rising
Brain Dead
(2007)

Cool, I love RetarDEAD (as well as Monsturd). You have a pretty good list. I haven't seen most of your Microbudget list, but I did actually see Special Dead a few weeks ago. It was rather funny.

I still don't think I could come up with a top list. Too many movies that I like for different reasons which makes listing difficult.
