Sue was completely at fault for the broken window

Axl may have provoked her but Sue threw the shoe at Axl and Brick just happened to swing the tennis racquet that propelled the shoe through the window. Why were Axl and Brick so nervous and trying to blame their neighbors? Sue is a good hearted person and would have confessed to it in minutes after their parents found out. Axl and Brick should have been patient and kept quiet.
