Child support has been my guess.The kids may have different fathers so she gets a few checks a month or at least enough to keep the home. One episode early on shows her struggling to buy groceries.

It's probably paid for already somehow, possibly inherited.

probably got in in the divorce... and then struggle to keep it with taxes, maybe payments, etc.
