Jerry Van Dyke.....

With the death of Jerry Van Dyke, who occasionally appeared as Frankie's father, Tag, do you think they'll write Tag's death into the series?

I seriously doubt it... In the first place, this series seldom deals with serious issues. Secondly, these characters seem to live in a dimension where nothing ever changes.

To wit, the kids' personalities are the same as they were 10 years ago. The characters show no growth.

reply

I don't know if they'll write in the death of Tag or not.

Both Aunt Ginny and Aunt Edie died (the actress who played Ginny passed in real life), and they had sweet episodes covering both. Frankie's mom had a serious health issue. So, they do handle serious issues, but in a heartwarming way.
I also disagree that nothing ever changes. There have been different jobs, schools, friends, romances, etc.

But why should the personalities change? They're maturing, but that doesn't make them into different people.

They're maturing, but that doesn't make them into different people.

Axl has never changed from being an obnoxious teenager, in love with his own "awesomeness." As a young man, he's still obnoxious. (But, Charlie handles the role very well.)

The same day his family took him to college -- he beat them home. This is because, to the writers, it's all about the family, and the family must be kept together.

Both the older kids went to college -- but always had some excuse to be home. This is not appealing or realistic. This is why I say the show is adverse to change.

reply

Yes, Axl is still obnoxious because that's what the character is. He has, however, shown a lot of growth. He's learned about humility, thinking of others, realizing life's not an easy ride, etc. If he were to suddenly become a normal man, it would be out of character and boring.

The show is about the Heck family, so, yes, it will be about family. But when the kids were at college, they had plenty of scenes/episodes that didn't take place at home. Axl at his place, Sue at hers, Axl in the Winnebago, etc.

This show isn't meant to be hyper-realistic. It's just supposed to be entertaining. It's certainly not perfect, but if it didn't entertain you, you should have found something else to do.

Well, aren't you special ! 🙄

reply

No, not special at all. But apparently you are. When others try to help, you decide to cop an attitude.

Ya gotta love a Spelling Nazi. 🙄

The only one here with an attitude is you.

The two words have entirely different meanings, and it would behoove you to learn them so that you don't continue sounding stupid.

Why keep watching if there is no growth? I’ve seen your old posts here that were archived and you never had anything positive to say about the show anyway but something draws you back each week.

Typical Internet response.....

Ho-hum... God forbid we should actually have an opinion and a discussion.

Well, not after friggin' nine years!

If I don't enjoy a show, I don't keep watching season after season.
