Sue's car

In ep 7.4 Risky Business, Sue comes home after just 17 days of college... with a car! I think it's a Cadillac. Completely unexplained, and Brad doesn't even comment on it (apart from chastising her for living in it). Did I miss something in a previous ep? I don't remember her getting a car, and anyway, in the ep Not Your Brother's Road Trip, the Hecks drove her to college in the family car and Axl's car. I'm confused, somebody help!

reply

Sorry, I can't help. I was just as surprised as you were that she had a car. A car that looks a lot better than the ones her parents drive, lol. Maybe she bought it with her Dollywood money.. who knows.

reply

It couldn't have been with her Dollywood money...since this was a year ago, and she's only worked at Dollywood over the last summer. I don't believe there was any explanation about the Cadillac. Very strange...but not so, really, when plot threads, established histories and characters either disappear, are never mentioned again, or changed willy-nilly.

IMDb, This has been asked and discussed before. Some users said maybe she inherited the car from one of Frankie's aunts who died. Remember the ones with the dog? But then the question is why didn't it show up sooner?

I think we first saw it when Sue drove Brick to the Planet Nowhere convention (Season 6 ep 16).

Sue makes a comment that "Aunt Edie's car is 3 feet wider than any car I've ever driven."

Thank you everyone for your help! I'm going to re-watch S6E16 to see if it's the same car :-)

I think The Middle is usually pretty good with continuity, which I expect is because it's always written by the creators of the series, rather than being farmed out to miscellaneous writers. The biggest exception that comes to mind is whatever happened to the killer rabbit that lived in the bathroom?... but my thinking on that one is that it was *such* a weird plot that maybe we're just supposed to consider it to be an inexplicable idiosyncrasy!

reply

Never mind the rabbit, what happened to the kittens?

reply

Brick probably killed them.

reply

The kittens were given away at the Frugal Hoosier parking lot. Not sure about Buggs the Bunny

I do remember a comment about never buying certain meat from the butcher there. (Implying they used the rabbit meat as chicken meat.)

Buggs must have gone to the same place The Brady Bunch pets Tiger & Fluffy went.

reply

Ah that's right.

reply

Rabbits were given away at the Frugal Hoosier too. After brick realized they weren't the same sex and they multiplied.

OK, I rewatched S6E16 and you're right - even though we only see the view from the windscreen (from outside, looking in at Sue and Brick) you can tell from the seat backs that it's the same Caddy as in S7E04. Thanks for the tip :-)

The Hecks abundance of automobiles has always perplexed me. All four adults have their own cars, and I bet even weird little Brick will get one two minutes after his 16th, too. How many ranch-style houses in working/lower middle class neighborhoods have four car garages? And although they're always riffing on their grinding poverty, they say things like "I just can't ride the bus" - even for one single day. (Sue channeling Lexi?)

reply

True! They are all quite old and dilapidated cars though. And remember they even had to borrow the church van to drive around in for a while...

reply

And were reluctant to give it back! ๎€Š I loved the scene with the pastor and deacons or whatever advancing on them like a street gang.

reply

That was a great episode. But even four vehicles would cost a lot with insurance and teen drivers make the payments go higher. I don't see how they afford it.

reply

I can't remember what episode it was, but the car came from Frankie's father. The episode was about him getting old and losing his license.

In the end he decides to give his car to Sue and let her drive him back home. Similar to how Kevin got his car on The Wonder Years.

Kudos to you solving the mystery. ๐Ÿ‘ Thanks
