Are Frankie and Brick mental?

They JUST had the house cleaned and Brick knock over a gallon of OJ. Instead of racing over to stop it from spilling completely out they just watch it spill on the floor. Then they do NOTHING to clean it up.

6% of scientists are republican. Scientists have no explanation why that number is so high

reply

Yeah, that was pretty frustrating to watch. I wondered if they were just so "broken down" at that point, they stopped caring about anything. But that explanation doesn't seem to work here.

reply

because its a tv show

reply

While that is true that this is a TV show. That was perhaps the DUMBEST moment ever filmed for the small screen. There was nothing funny or entertaining about that scene.

I'm hoping that's hyperbole and you don't truly believe that.

Have you never had a day or a time where you feel so defeated that when something like that happens you don't even feel like moving? You feel like "What's the point of hurrying to clean it up?"

Considering Frankie had just had FREE MAID SERVICE a few minutes earlier, and the maid had finally cleaned her kitchen to perfection, then yes, I think it was TOTALLY DUMB for Frankie to just stand there and let that juice spill out.

What the hell should she feel "defeated?" About what? She got free maid service, for heaven's sake.

Cripes, sometimes I wonder if you people even watch the show.

I wonder the same thing about you.

Frankie and the rest of the Hecks never get a "win" in life. She won a maid service which ended up being more work for Frankie, not less. She finally got someone who was capable of cleaning the house and made it look better than it had probably ever looked since the Hecks lived there. It's not clean for all that long before Brick spills the juice. Instead of thinking "Quick! Clean it up!" Frankie sees into her future and knows that the house will quickly end up just as dirty as it has always been. She can't win. That's the point. How can you people not get that? This isn't Heart of Darkness with some deep, esoteric symbolism. It's fairly simple to understand.

Frankie can't win? She has two kids in college, and it never cost her a single dime. I'd say that's pretty darned lucky. She has a good job, a husband who doesn't cheat, has a good figure, and takes advantage of everyone and everything. How is that "not winning?"

When she gets a part-time job to supplement their income, Frankie's attitude is so nasty, so downright poor, I have difficulty "feeling" for her. All that matters is the money. Screw dedication and discipline.

How is it "not winning" when you eat your neighbor's entire Thanksgiving meal without telling them? Or use their car without permission and getting it all filthy? Someone who's a defeatest wouldn't even bother. She'd lie in bed all day and not want to get up in the morning.

Ah, but a narcissistic opportunist, however, would enjoy every minute of it.

I wonder if you watched that episode or paid attention to the dialogue. Frankie just explained to Brick how she'd always wanted a clean house, and Brick was so touched, he even rinsed off his dish for her. Then, after trial and error, Frankie hits paydirt with a maid who does EVERYTHING she'd ever dreamed of...and rather than do even the basics to maintain it, she lets her son pour a gallon of orange juice on the floor.

Sorry, but that's not an example of a defeatist attitude. You're not "defeated" when someone just cleaned your house FOR FREE, while you sit on the couch stuffing your face with potato chips. That's called being damned lucky. Frankie lucked out, plain and simple. And she'll luck out again, mark my words.

Humor-wise, it would've been much funnier if she saw the jug tip over, rushed to pick it up, Brick rushed to pick it up, they collide, and juice goes everywhere--not just on the floor. Then the door would've been opened for a quip from Frankie.

Instead, she just stands there, watching the juice fall. Yes, it was DUMB.

I stopped reading right there. Bro, you don't even watch the show. Mike had to sell his interest in the diaper business to pay for Sue's college this season. You have different definition of winning than most people.

You're too dumb to argue with.

reply

In earlier episodes, Axl had guzzled both orange juice and milk and spilled them down his chest and onto the floor. Maybe "problem drinking" is a repeating gag.

reply

My favorite was when Axl splashed milk on himself and then sopped it up with a slice of bread and then ate the bread.

Maybe this was another case of wasting large amounts of food on ABC sitcoms! I wrote up the following in another board, in a thread about connections, like using the same story, between the different series:

Yes - the one that has made the biggest impression on me is throwing away large amounts of food. Beverly Goldberg's Thanksgiving test turkey - the look on Barry's face when she dropped it in the garbage after he tasted it and pronounced it delicious! On Modern Family, Claire threw away a bunch of fancy sandwiches her assistant had made for her family, because she decided she was cheating by having him secretly do things she felt she should be doing along with her new responsibilities at work. In an earlier episode she threw away a whole batch of cupcakes when she realized her daughter had tricked her into doing all the work for her to take to school. On Fresh Off the Boat the dad threw away a whole pot of chili, preparing for a cookoff. And on the O'Neals the older son threw away a huge plate of food he had just been served at a church supper, after breathing in a deep whiff of the aroma - I don't remember why (not because there was anything wrong with the food).

I read an article about how pay TV shows (I only see broadcast TV with an antenna) are one-upping each other with shocking content (like rape and incest, apparently) and thought maybe broadcast TV was trying to be more shocking in their own way.

When I was writing this the other day, I couldn't think of a case on The Middle because they usually only have a little food around at a time. But now that I think of it, the Thanksgiving episode, when they ate all of the Donahues' food, could be seen as a slow motion abuse of a large amount of food.

reply

I don't think Frankie and Brick are mental.

reply

The writers did it to shock the audience, and it worked!
