I tried just couldn't get into this

I've been told over and over to binge Spartacus. I'm in the minority but I hate the cartoon 300 cinematography. Immediate turn off for me. I also couldn't get pass the cheap CGI production. The overall story wasn't bad. However the acting at times was a bit overdid and filled with softporn to bridge dull gaps. I don't know if it was the Matrix that started the whole slow motion fighting scenes but I wish we could go back in time and undo that particular style. It's so overdid and played out now. The rock and roll music playing when Gannicus fought reminded me of a 80s wrestler ringwalk music. Just a little to cheesy for my liking.

Just got into the Vikings I'm enjoying this so much better. Way more traditional and what a original story about the Vikings. I'm just a traditionalist I suppose. To each its own

How many episodes did you watch if you don't mind me asking?

The only thing Spartacus has in common with 300 is the blood spray and even that gets toned down as the series progresses. The show is meant to resemble a live-action graphic novel, hence the effects.

After the mid-point of Season 1, the show gets better from an acting/writing/directing standpoint. They're telling the story about slavery and how damaging it is to the human soul. The sex and nudity also serve a purpose as the show explores how the human body is used, be it for love, deception and debauchery.

The rock and roll music playing when Gannicus fought reminded me of a 80s wrestler ringwalk music.

Um, gladiators were like the pro athletes/rockstars of their time and Gannicus sees himself as the best of the best, so the music fits with his personality.

reply

Totally disagree about the music. I don't wanna hear modern music in a movie based on past history. Can you imagine Maximus fighting to the sound of a electric guitar? No! It cheapens the moment. The score has to be perfect to set the mood. And no this isn't wrestling so no the music did not fit. But that's beside the point. I just couldn't get into the show. It wasn't completely bad just over the top with things. I'm old school this was a ltitle too pop culturish for me.

reply

If Maximus was a boozing cocky type of gladiator, then yes, why not use a rock soundtrack? Gladiators were the popular celebrities of their time, so I am OK with the show using rock guitar as music. The characters themselves aren't interacting with modern day bandmembers, so it's fine to use something other than choir and orchestra for a soundtrack (something which I feel gets boring after hearing it in EVERY historical movie or TV show).

And please stop with the "I'm old school" nonsense. I'm in my 30's and I can appreciate a variety of genres and cinematic presentation. I loved the presentation of Spartacus as it was unique in comparison to every other Roman-based historical show.

Why be such a groupie bending over showing everyone your "Spartacus" tramp stamp? You are a typical groupie totally bypass my post and point out the criticism. My post was for open dialogue. You and others like yourself should start a podcast so you can control the narrative of the discussion.

reply

You're on a Spartacus board so naturally of course people are going to be defensive. On the Vikings board I'm sure there aren't as many Spartacus defenders.

reply

You're joking right? So you are not allowed to watch a show and point out its flaws? Am I suppose to paint my face and waive pom poms? I guess ppl took the whole "empire" thing literally. This is a message board guy. So according to your logic this is a choir where we all sing to one tune?

reply

You started this thread and claim it's open for discussion, yet when I made my points earlier about why I enjoyed the show, you take on a condescending tone calling us "groupies" and act like we're mindless sheep.

Your very approach to this is rather flawed.

reply

Your response to my response to me about my opinion "stop with the old school nonsense" nonsense? Who the Fook are you to call my response nonsense? So yes you came off like a butthurt fanboy. You just had to take pardoning shot like most fanboy do.

reply

The show has the best sword fighting scenes ever done and the style and manner it's done in elevates it to an unparalleled level. The story, sets, costumes, violence, dialogue, gore and actors just added to its incredible production. It even puts the stellar Vikings to shame.

reply

That's your opinion. My opinion is it's cheaply made. I'm sorry I'm a cinematography guy. I love seeing actual scenery in these type of shows anyway. I'm not sure what the budget was it was definitely a Walmart budget. Vikings GOT actually shoot on real locations. With beautiful surroundings. That means something. I'm sure I'm not alone. Far as the story it wasn't bad it was definitely entertaining. I just hate that Matrix slow pace fighting camera shot. It's so overdid and played-out.

reply

It's meant to resemble a live-action graphic novel so the backdrops fit with what the creators were going for. It's something unique from the usual historical period settings.

Alexander and Troy both had real locations but that doesn't necessarily make them good. I want a good story with characters to drive it. Locations and cinematography don't make everything.

The Matrix-style fighting you speak of gets toned down as the series progresses. They focus more on the character motives and drama.

reply

Vikings does have a superior look due to Location shooting vs. green screen. But that's about it.

reply

The best “sword fighting scenes ever done” are in Kurosawa’s films, and I teach Samurai sword. The scenes in this series, which I enjoy, are exciting, but they are fighting with Glaves, a sword vastly more limited in the techniques a warrior can use than a Katana.

reply

You have to get past the first 3 episodes or so and that's when I got hooked back in 2010

reply

Embrace pain and suffering. Go back and watch it until the end. Set mind to purpose and see it done.

reply

Or hold tongue unless see it painfully removed.
Damn I miss that dialogue.
