Alex

I admit I don't watch religiously. I usually catch most of the episodes on Hulu. But, what happened to Alex being in college? She's home all the time now. I'm sure I missed something.

She has (or had) mono.

And I believe given the amount of time she took out she decided to take the semester off.

I wish IMDB had a like button

It's dumb that they wrote her character taking time off school just to keep her at home more.

Like you said, it wasn't necessary because only being 30 minutes away is nothing and there were plenty of times where it was perfectly logical she would be home.

Plus, now they've lost some of the funny moments they could have shown when she was at school. Like last season when Luke noticed her roommate changing clothes in the background of their Skype session and immediately called Manny to head over to her dorm in hopes of hooking up with college girls.

You're right. As little as they use her in plots, there was no need to come up with a dumb excuse to have her at home more. Maybe if she were rounded out more as a character and used more integrally in the show it would make sense.

This. I'm hoping against hope they at least do something with her at her coffee shop job, but if they don't and she simply just goes back to school in a month or two, I seriously don't know what was the whole point of her story arc the first third of the season.

Right now, she's home because she has mono, but when she decided to go to Cal-Tech, they made a note of saying that it was only 30 to 40 minutes away. While we don't know exactly where the Dunphys live, the real-life house is in West LA, about 10 miles from Cal-Tech, which is in Pasadena. So the writers having her attend Cal-Tech allows her character to be home a lot anyway.

I don't think it's been explicitly stated, but it's pretty clearly suggested they live in Pacific Palisades, which - to my understanding - is consistently distant from Pasadena.

I do remember her having mono. Thanks, everyone!

Right--Pacific Palisades never moves, always maintaining the same distance from Pasadena.
