Alex and Cal Tech?

Why is she at home and not Cal Tech?

reply

She had to take extended time off when she had mono, so decided to take the summer off as she'd be well behind.

Semester** oops

Caltech is on the quarter system. 

reply

Caltech is on the quarter system.

Caltech is on a trimester system (Fall, Winter, and Spring), they don't have regular classes during the summer.

reply

That's known as a quarter system in the US. Stanford and 8 of the UC schools also run on the system in California.

It's ridiculous, all these kids should've left home already. I wonder how they're gonna keep Luke and Manny home?

reply

They will probably send Luke and Manny to the same school so they can have plots together there. Yep, more cringey Luke and Manny plots, can't wait.

It is ridiculous that Haley still lives at home. I can't believe they are so lax regarding her rarely having a stable job. At this point she should at least pay rent, or do anything to start to learn finances.

I wish IMDB had a like button

This was discussed in another thread at some length.

The general takeaway (well, mine anyway):

- It's not wildly unusual for a twenty-something to be living with his or her parents.

- It works as a commentary on the fact this is more common nowadays than it might have been at other times.

- It makes particular sense given the fact the family has a relatively nice house in a relatively high-cost geographical area.

- It fits Haley's character. She's not exactly a driven person.

- It fits Phil's indulgent nature. It fits Claire's nature in that she feels a need to be needed.

Knowing the characters, I have no problem believing they're lax, that she doesn't pay rent, or that she doesn't know much about finances. Indeed, I'd have more trouble believing the opposite, as it would be somewhat out of character for all involved.

reply

Yeah, everything stated above makes sense to me and I am quite ok with Haley living at home.

However, Alex taking a semester/trimester/whatever off from school I don't care for at all. Other than students taking a gap year before starting school, in my experience it's quite rare for students at schools like CalTech or other top schools to take time off (even if they got mono). It's enough they made her attend a local school; extending it to "home for a full term with mono" is unnecessarily farfetched and just lame.

Haley living at home makes perfect sense. It fits her character

reply

Yeah its weird tho I do like seeing them all together still.

Lose the Game!!!!!!!

Basiscly almost all family shows end up with this issue during 4-6th season when one, or more of the childs grow up.
They don't want to ruin the "success factor" which has worked for so long, but does it ever work though?

Why not rather have Alex in a dorm, and create storylines with her schoolmates. Maybe introduce some new characters to the show. Instead of just always keep making up stuff to keep them at home until the show gets canceled? I mean, it's so much more storylines that can be added to the show by doing this, and if they're scared they can have a solution where Alex stays home on the weekends. Just base 70% of the episodes on weekends or something.

reply

I agree Ch_Kings. Kids going away to college on sitcoms never work. I thought that it would actually work on this one because Cal Tech is close enough that she could be in college, go to classes etc, but still be around the house enough for storylines. Of course they've never written any good storylines for Alex in the first place so...

But like you said, introduce some new characters and have Alex have some storylines away from the family. The show has gotten too insulated to where it's almost always just the family. We don't see Pepper that much anymore or any of those guys, Gil hasn't been around in a season or two, we haven't seen Cam at school for a while. It's getting stale.

I've said for a while now that they should have Alex and Haley get an apartment together and let them have friends away from the family. It would introduce new storylines to see how these girls handle growing up, learning about the world, and having to become self sufficient.

reply

This to infinity plus one. Heck, they can't even be bothered apparently to even give Alex an in-depth story about her new coffee shop job. I don't want to say never say never, but last week felt like their last best chance to do so, since she should be going back to CalTech any day now (in real life their new term started back on January 4) and I can't see her doing both, at least not for very long unless she plans on landing in therapy again.

reply

Yeah, having them in the same apartment would be great. It would not be that far off either. Phil is a realtor, their grandfather is loaded with cash. How hard would it even be to create that story. Alex doesnt want to live on a dorm because reasons, and the parents and Jay thought it would be a smart move to buy an apartment the girls can live in.

I know with that solution you will miss alot of the "Dunphy's around the kitchen dialogs" but we have so many seasons of that already. With them in a apartment of their own we can have new funny situations where they have to figure out living on their own.

But to be completely honest i stopped watching after the first episode of season 7, when Dylan appears yet again. Thats just a sign that the tv-show is going towards the end. I will always rate Modern Family as one of my favourite comedy shows of all time, but i will most likely only watch the first five seasons when i watch it again.

I almost get the feeling that the writers have tried to write some unique stuff, but have been told to just continue with "whats working", which seems to actually be the case in many situations sadly. Either that or the writers actually have run completely out of material for the show.

I wish we could like posts on here, Ch_Kings.

Hehe, thanks :). Yeah, would be a nice feature.

She's supposedly not adapting "socially". Yeah, right--pretty FEMALES are really unpopular at "sausage party" universities like Cal Polytech.

reply

Pretty females? Who are you talking about? Alex is a dumpy, bitch-faced, self-absorbed, cruel little a-hole. Even if she was "pretty", her horrid personality would deter any guys at any university from being attracted to her. The best she'll ever be is some nerd's desperation fuck.
