To the Lily haters. Do you think she was funny in earlier seasons?

Its torture watching her now but I found her hilarious when she was younger. Her scene with Elizabeth banks, the episode when she kept getting hurt, when she got stuck on the conveyer at the cleaners, the whole wahmbulance thing. I was expecting her and the other two kids to go through that brutal awkward stage, I just wouldnt have ever imagined itd be this bad. She was funny at one point though.

she was amzing up until season 6 or 7. i think the actress just kind of outgrew the part. Lily's dry sense of humour isnt so cute when its not coming from a toddler.

Lily was my favorite character until this year. Her timing was great, she was hysterical. Don't know what happened this year. She's not been in many episodes and the ones she is in they don't let her speak. This week was really awkward. She was finally back in and just stood there. I'm wondering if they're going to write her off, send her to boarding school or something. I feel bad for her because every other child actor has many lines. Who can forget "Little Bo Bleep," and many other episodes where she was so funny. I hope they get her with a coach or something, because I really enjoyed her character.

She's a great character. You guys have to give her props- the little actress is playing the part perfectly as written.

I agree. She was funny as a young child. But, now, her acting is awkward. I feel sort of sorry for her because she seems lost in many scenes. Aging children in a TV series is an ongoing problem that can't be helped. So few child stars turn out to be great adult actors--cute as kids, unappealing as teenagers or adults. But, the producers can't just write her out of the show.

I was amazed at how grown up she is looking now, I don't know when that happened! As for the character, I never found her all that funny anyway, I thought it was always more about how Cam and Mitchell reacted to her.

You make a good point. It's still true that any funny scenes with Lily usually relate to how Cam and Mitchell deal with her. Another problem with the Lily character is that her reactions and facial expressions are off most of the time.

reply

She doesn't usually have many expressions, maybe that's why the writers had her be a bit moody and sulky so she didn't have to express so many emotions.. I can't think of any scenes of her being cheerful or laughing.

You mentioned earlier that you're amazed at how grown up Lily is looking now. I had exactly the same reaction this season watching her. It was like suddenly she went from a six year old to a sixteen year old.
It's weird. Also, you're right that she scowls most of the time--only one expression.

reply

Yeah, she definitely seems to have become a teenager rather than a child although IMDb says she is only 9! She's very grown up for her age and I think it wasn't even the start of the season, it was after the midseason break that I noticed it.

I'm probably in the minority in thinking that Lily is a funny character. She does look grown up for her age. But I do think she is funny.

She actually reminds me a little of one of my sisters. My youngest sister was so serious. She would say funny things but in a totally deadpan way. She didn't smile much. She would watch cartoons and her favorite sitcoms like they were documentaries. lol

Some people just give off that serious vibe.

I think that's probably why Modern Family works as a show, there are so many different characters with different personalities that there is going to be someone to appeal to everyone.

She was great when she was younger and so blunt, tactless, selfish, and exasperated with her silly parents--back when Mitch and Cam suspected she might be a sociopath. In the last couple of seasons they haven't involved her much, compared to the other four kids, which is kind of strange. I just watched the next-to-last episode (April 1, 2020) and she had more lines than she has lately, but they made her sweet and kind--completely out of character and not the Lily I used to find so funny.
