Geez! It's called breaking the 4th wall. Consider it like their thoughts or narration.
Why do ordinary people sing and dance in musicals? It's a technique to give information on emotions, thoughts, and motivations to the audience!

You kind of answered you own question. He would see Claire on the couch talking to the camera. That segment of her talking to the camera would be seen by the viewers, that's who they're really talking to.
