Did viewers even like Lux?

My husband and I could barely stand her. I bought the series on sale and we watched it from beginning to end all the while saying how annoying Cate and Lux were. At times they were more tolerable but overall, those two characters were really hard to accept. We mainly watched for Baze and Tasha. Anyone else?

Lux was an immature, whiny, self-absorbed mess. The character had great potential, but it was never fully realized. The last few episodes were laughable and the show just kept spinning into ever more bizarre story lines.

I checked this out from the library and was interested in watching as I'm originally from PDX and I enjoyed seeing Stumptown in all her glory. The producers did an excellent job in portraying Portland, and with a few exceptions, got it mostly right. The city of Portland was the only "character" I really liked in this show.

The second season was especially messy. It was like the producers threw everything up in the air and hoped for the best. New characters were introduced, and then never seen again. Or worse, as in the case of Julia, they were seen again much to my chagrin. Plots became absurd and the dialogue was some of the worst doggerel on TV.

It seemed to me that as season 2 dragged on even some of the actors had checked out and were just trying to get the season finished w/o too much damage to their careers.

I would imagine that most people had a hard time with Cate and Lux because they generally acted like spoiled and whiny 14 year old girls. Just about every scene with them began and ended the same way, i.e., give them what they want, they'll like you for a day longer, don't, and they'll walk off in a huff as if you never did anything for them ever. The rules were typically different for them as well, i.e, their dihonesty was always more justified than anyone else's. Don't get me started on how Baise needed every single woman he met to like him. Did anyone find him that irresistable? I'm not sure what's worse: the needy Baise or the starving for affetion women that he always seemed to meet. In essence, it all got quite old, if not exasperating, fast.

As this appeared to be a show written more for 13 year old girls, it makes sense why most viewers of adult age had a hard time caring for these characters, i.e., they just didn't ring true. Younger viewers can be remarkably forgiving as they often can't tell when they're being manipulated by the writing team. Then again, what do I know? The show did last 2 seasons. That's considered a hit in this day and age.

"excellent job in portraying Portland"
you got to be kidding yourself.
anyone who has actually been to Portland can tell that it looks nothing like that.

i'm also from Portland and it looks exactly like what it did in the series. maybe you're just thinking of the inaccurately exaggerated portrayal of the city on Portlandia.

For some reason Britt always seems to play b*tchy characters.

I have to agree Lux and Cate were extremely annoying. Baze, Tasha and Ryan were the reasons I kept on watching it. Lux was extremely self-absorbed, seemed to get off on the fact that she would get people to lie to cover for her and get punished, etc. Same with Cate to a degree, she lied a lot and blew everything out of proportion if someone even remotely held a small fragment of something from her like it was the ultimate betrayal. I kept on hoping that Cate was going to die in a fiery wreck or something. I can see why the series died off after two seasons. The main character was unlikable, the main secondary (Cate) was unlikable. Plus it seems they tried to put as many cliches into this series as possible.

I'm not really sure why I kept watching. I thought Ryan was kind of a douche. Like he held it over Cate's that she cheated on him even though technically they weren't together at the time. Granted she shouldn't have lied about it, but then he basically did the same thing and was a total hypocrite about it.

Yeah she was the reason I watched it.

Then I started thinking Baze was a legend and the best thing about the show.

What are you talking about? Lux is perfectly annoyingly 15 years old.

Lux is teen-light compared to raising a daughter that you never met, in real life. Trust me, kids are very hard work especially when you dropped the ball as the parent. If you are annoyed by Lux, imagine never having anyone you can trust, ever. It builds a bit of a thick skin wall that holds others at a distance for defensive purposes. This series does not even come close to revealing the challenges of this situation in real life. If it were like real life, no one would enjoy watching it.

Now I am at the end of season 2 and I'm glad to be done with Lux. I really had a hard time with her and could not stand her anymore at the end. Her selfish attitude, her constant yelling and everything got on my nerves more than once. Even her facial expressions were irritating and her graduation speech was pretty boring. BTW I watched for the other actors. Sorry but it's what I'm thinking.

I am serious, guys, serious like a heart attack...

Lux's horrible attitude was difficult to bear most of the time, but realistically, and in terms of the storyline, I can understand why it was important to portray her this way. The writers had only begun to scratch at the surface of what Lux had dealt with after 15 years in the foster care system. Had the show lasted even longer, I'm sure they would have explored even more, and Lux's behavior would have probably gotten a lot worse before it got better. So, yeah, her character was obnoxious most of the time, but it was important to be honest about what her past had done to her emotionally...and Britt Robertson is such an amazing actress. I think she did a great job with the role.

I agree with what people have said about her being realistic. She was a typical fifteen year old girl who had been let down by a lot of people. I remember being fifteen (though I am a guy not a girl) and though I am not from a broken home where I as abandoned and had to put up with the things this sort of things but I remember being a whiny little bastard at times, its what you do at that age and honestly anyone who says there were not in a small way whiny, argumentative and annoying was either very well brought up and had everything that ever needed or wanted or lying.
