British Uniform Question

I noticed a black, what looked like, Iron Cross on their uniforms, brief glimpses, between the shoulders, especially when Edward is preparing to depart to Italy.

Anyone here know what that is? I've not seen it before.

Thanks!

I was wondering about that myself... maybe it means wounded or combat veteran?

The Dark green maltese cross on the back of the uniform is a battle insignia identifying the division or regiment. Edward Brittain went with 11th Sherwood Foresters to Italy, but I'm unable to tell whether the insignia is for that batallion.

The use of battle insignias on the back is an effective way to identify troops advancing in no mans land. Especially when seen through binoculars from a rear trench. I have never seen it used in any other army or war.
