I was on the edge of my seat at the end, expecting the ending from the book. Plenty of changes but I still loved the adaptation. Emily Blunt is just amazing, and I joked to my friend that KST looked like Patsy Stone at the salmon release, so we laughed out loud at the end when that was her name on the IM with the PM
The book's ending was definitely not a Lasse Hallstrom ending, that's for sure. I, for one, am just happy they didn't kill off Robert after all - very glad to get to see more of Tom Mison.
I haven't read the book, but I've just seen the film and really enjoyed it. How did Robert die in the book? I was on the edge of my seat when Fred and the Sheikh were swirling around in the water.
Also, the sheik gets swept away by the water, I don't think the PM did, tho. And Fred and Mary don't split up, but they're not really together. He says they move into a smaller flat (they didn't have a house and he didn't have a koi pond) since neither one is there much, I think he has a very low-paying job in Scotland.
I haven't read the novel. The film was pleasant enough but not a keeper, I thought. I did think it was one of Ewan McGregor's best performances, and that KST stole the show, very funny despite being lumbered with such a broad, obvious caricature. Not sold on Emily Blunt, I think - on evidence so far - that she's a very limited actress, and limited actresses really need much more charm and presence than she displays to get by in lead roles.
Had no idea they changed the end of the story. Pretty much loathed the end of the movie.
I agree that KST stole the film. Emily Blunt can read the phone book and I would be happy. I think she is amazing. Ewan McGregor appears in some strange films but that is his choice. I wish he would just for a change smile more and make a good entertaining film and a lot less arty films. He was good in this but his Fred was perhaps a tad to old fashioned. I enjoyed it and I could tell the audience did too going with the laughter.
