What are the salmon going to eat?

This seems to be the question the film did not answer.

Salmon do not eat in fresh water.....to catch them you have to provoke them to snap at a lure / fly out of instinct.

That fits with what I've heard about salmon.
I never understood where the fresh water stream was ending? Cause that's where the new salmons would go after hatching right?

Purina Salmon Chow, obviously. Sheesh.

(Seriously, good question.)

Rather than stone offenders, the Yemenis will hang them face-first over the river so their wieners dangle in the water, and the salmon will do the rest.

Salmon most certainly do eat in fresh water. There are large populations of landlocked salmon that cannot reach saltwater. They live in lakes and run up streams and rivers to spawn.

But those streams and rivers are not in the middle of a desert. There is very little wild life in the desert. I guess the river could produce an artificial eco-system.

Salmon eat aquatic insects, invertebrates, minnows, anything that most trout and members of the Salmonidae family will eat. It is only when they make their "run" upriver to spawn that they will eventually give up eating, and after the spawn they will die. Bears and fishermen will take advantage of the salmon run, bears just grab them, fishermen snag them with a technique known as "lining". The latter isn't much of a sport, many will disagree but in order to hook a fish that no longer eats requires something other than a natural drift of an imitation of an aquatic insect.
