I realize that your comment was made more than 2 years ago so it's unlikely you'll ever see my response, but here goes...
Opera is more popular now than at any time in history. More professionals than ever are able to make a reasonable living dedicated to opera. As a business it rivals pop music in gross revenues. Opera fans are willing to pay for high quality recording at a much higher percentage than pop fans who typically steal music through illegal downloading. It may not be your taste in music but claiming it has no base simply makes you look foolish.

Clearly, the OP has never tried to get a ticket to Covent Garden or The NY Met. S/he would discover that there are slightly more than two people who like opera.
