billy connellys performance

I wonder what did people think of billy connelly performance since he was rather funny.

reply

I thought Billy C. was fantastic. He played the character so good.

His character was tiresome with the tasteless jokes but he was really good.

reply

I thought he was great. There are men like that - no matter how old they get.

reply

Yes his character was tiresome but I also thought he was miscast, just not believable in the least as a former opera star. He was cast for the "blue" jokes and his history playing raw characters and while he may he believable as a lech he just did not seem credible at all as someone who would have been a part of this world. This character seems to only exist in this film to throw in a couple of sex gags in an attempt to make this film more appealing for a audience who can't imagine a movie without sexual content.

reply

He really saved the movie, can't imagine how depressing it would have been without him

I have not seen every performance of Billy Connelly's, but of the ones I have seen, they are all alike, including his stand-up comedy or live appearances. They are all the same character. Rather outspoken and rude, raunchy jokes and innuendo and a smug sneer.

Have you seen Mrs. Brown? It was that role that convinced me the man really can act.

reply

Nothing against his general characterisation, but there is no way he would have been an opera singer with that raspy speaking voice.

In fact, that was my main qualm with the film. It was quite fun over all, but I didn't find any of them believable as singers. Why not make a film using singers who can act (they do exist!) rather than actors who then have to be dubbed/not shown singing for the final performance? Okay, I know - it was also about big names (Courtenay, Smith etc.) but it was totally unbelievable. Could you really imagine any of them having operatic singing voices?

And no - I'm not talking about physique. It is incorrect that all opera singers are fat/tall. Plenty are small and slim, or else somewhere in between, and there are many different types of voice. I just cannot imagine those sorts of sounds coming out of the mouths of those actors.

reply

billy was added to the cast because Peter O'Toole and Albert Finney couldn't take the part. Maggie Smith was brilliant. I can think of Dame Judi Dench in the same role but Maggie surpassed herself
