Emilio playing a character who was 'almost 40'?

In the preview, Martin Sheen says "my son was almost 40"> I know Emilio still looks boyish for 49, but to play a character who was "almost 40"? The same goes for Tom Cruise who is the exact same age as Emilio, but still plays 35 year olds.

Ya,he looked older than 4o for sure but I did not realise he is almost 50

He looked young in the final scene with the incense

I just saw the last Mission Impossible … for some reason … and Cruise really looked terrible. He's always been odd looking for a leading man and to me his whole career has been a lot of luck, and he must be related to or have amazing connections. I thought Estevez seemed OK … it's a movie, you're supposed to go with the flow and suspend your disbelief. ;-) it's more fun if you do, especially if is not that hard.

Agree, he could easily pass a 40 year old.

I'm sure there are many 40 year old that could pass for 60, but that does not mean he should not play the role.

One of the major criticisms of the movie is that Estevez was playing someone who is supposedly much younger than his actual age AND that even the 39(?) year old character himself is doing things that are for people who are much younger than he-- such as impulsive behavior and attending grad school. As one of the critics phrased it, " Going to grad school at your age? You should be head of the college's department by now."
But I love this film regardless.

People do things at different ages. I went to (undergrad) university with a guy well into his 50s. What an interesting, productive life he had lived already, and he was also a great student.

Was gonna say.

Critics really should be less snarky about points like that. The movie doesn't give a specific timeframe between that flashback scene and his death. What did the critic think, he dropped out of school and went straight to France to walk The Way? Those events could have been many years apart.

Yeah, it was the same actor and yeah he looked older, but its a small movie, just go with what they're giving you.

I've known a 35 year old who was in university for the second time around to finish just his bachelor's, due to packing it in to travel the world the first time. He was a pretty old damn student compared to the others at that level. I've known 39 year olds and even 50 year olds who are still doing the impulsive things the Daniel (Emilio) character was doing. There are some people who never, ever grow up, and are still with the sophomore age folks, backpacking, partying, "finding themselves," being in bands, smoking pot, etc.

There's no age limit on being too young and full of shit to settle down to real life, lol.

i think he easily passes for 40...I'm 40..and have friends that are 30 that look much older than him. I dont know how old the two guys he walks with...the fat dutch guy and the irish writer are supposed to be.. but Emilio looks younger than both of them..

reply

I bought it. I didn't think he looked particularly older than about 40.

Of course, I guess you could argue that since a lot of people who see this film already know he's well past that age, mentioning the specific age in the script might've been a bad idea. Could've written around it easily.

i personally did think he looks older than 40 as well. but not too much older, so it didn't bother me that much. and likewise to the whole being in grad school. initially when daniel mentions being in grad school i was a bit like, 'what? you seem a bit old.' but like someone else said, people nowadays do things at different points in their lives.

i do feel the film should of shown more flashbacks about daniel and his life. it was enjoyable, just i would of liked to learned a bit more about daniel and tom's relationship.

Just saw it today . Hadn't seen Emilio in anything in awhile but I thought he passes for "almost 40" easily. Didn't put much thought into it actually. As for grad school I agree people go back later in life often. I got my masters at 40 and my dad got his phd at 65! Really enjoyed the movie

Yeah, Emilio looked the part enough - don't know what people are complaining about.

As far as grad school, it was mentioned enough in the film that Daniel and Tom didn't see eye to eye on things and the way that Daniel lived. So, I inferred that Daniel was pretty unconventional, and probably did these types of adventure/walkabout trips often. So, him being in grad school at 39 doesn't seem too far off for someone who's taking time to live life instead of preparing for a career.

I definitely noticed the line, but i thought of it in terms of Emilio, trying to pull one over on the audience, being that he is the film-maker, and allowed the line to stay when he could have easily changed the dialogue to say. 'almost 50'.

he kept it in for selfish reasons. (I don't really think that.... but i did contemplate it).
