Horrible writing - Mei gave up her newborn for adoption?

because life in China is hard? Hello?! There are Asian Americans watching the show. As an Asian american who has a two year old and another one coming along, this is vomit inducing. The world is changing now, with the ecconomic downturn going on in US now and China taking the role of growth engine for the world, it is debatable where life is harder.

Even if life in US IS nicer, nice enough to give up your child? Come on! This is digusting. This is not 20 years ago. I know the writers wants America to feel better about themselves, but this is delusional. I definitely expected better writing for a show at this level.

I agree!! I found the portrayal of China extremely outdated and biased. Although China is a developing country and the political system over there is very different to that in the Western world, I found the constant emphasis on the harshness of life over in the "totalitarian state" of China very ignorant.

As mentioned above the world is changing - China recently surpassed Germany in terms of GDP, and is set to overtake Japan soon, becoming the world's 2nd largest economy behind the US. Many businesses today acknowledge that China is THE market and place for growth in the future. Thus, I find it terribly hard to understand how difficult life could be for Mei and her child! I can think of far more things worse than being a child brought up in modern China. I understand that there are vast differences in wealth between the rich and the poor - but I highly doubt that Mei is among the very poorest!

It is shows like this that promote the ignorant and inaccurate impressions many in the Western world have of China. I too expected more from a show of this nature.

I figured she was just going to give the child to her husband's parents. Which might not have been so bad.
Also, she might not have been able to raise the baby properly in China. I mean, her family lived in American, she had no job there and the father of her baby died. It would have a fairly hard struggle, where as the baby could have been adopted by a loving family that could support it. It seemed like the better situation.

I thought it was a little extreme too. It's not like there is a war in china. If anything, her family can send her money while in China. She can live a comfortable life there. I mean her husband's family can afford an expensive law firm. (or was it pro bono?)

The whole China is bad and America is great really bothered me as well even though I am not Asian. I found it very insulting to China for the writers to pen such nonsense. In truth, CHINA is doing well economically and is a power country. The writers behaved as though this progressing country that America owes trillions of dollars to, is some third-word country where no one has a chance of survival. That was simply ridiculous!
